Process Engineer

Vertellus is currently seeking a Process Engineer in the Global Corporate Engineering group at our manufacturing facility located in Indianapolis, IN.

The Process Engineer is responsible for all phases of process design work for new and improved chemical manufacturing facilities. This may include new product development, research related new process discovery activities, performing detailed design calculations and simulations, identifying opportunities for process optimization, recommending process design changes, and assisting with the implementation and start-up of those recommendations. A senior engineer frequently leads teams on the execution of the front-end process engineering work. Occasional travel to other Vertellus manufacturing sites will be required.

RESPONSIBILITIES: Develop preliminary scope and plan for new projects, estimate preliminary project costs and benefits. Prepare new, or modify existing plant Process Flow Diagrams (PFD’s). Complete detailed Material and Energy Balances for new or modified processes. Prepare new or modified Process and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&ID’s). Size and specify new process equipment and re-rate existing equipment for new capacities or services. Size and specify Safety Relief Devices and vent systems. Prepare new, or modify existing Plant Operating Procedures to accurately reflect project scope, control philosophy, and objectives. Work with plant operating personnel to troubleshoot plant operation issues, especially when associated with project implementations. Work on Continuous Improvement Projects as identified or needed. Areas of emphasis include: manufacturing cost reduction, capacity improvements/cycle time reductions, energy and waste reduction, and process reliability. Work with R&D or lead cross-functional teams on new product development and scale up activities. Work with R&D or lead R&D teams on discovery based research programs Participate in or lead process safety activities and risk identification and mitigation activities.

QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical Engineering 3-5 years of experience in process design or process engineering, preferably in a chemical manufacturing environment Fundamental knowledge of continuous and batch chemical operations including reaction, distillation, heat exchange, solids handling, utilities and process control Demonstrated project management skills Problem solving skills including the ability to analyze technical data and make creative and balanced decisions Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills to a variety of audiences at different levels Self-motivated with the ability to take initiative and work successfully in cross functional teams Flexibility to work in both office and operating plant environments on a wide variety of activities Working Knowledge of process safety tools (PHA, LOPA, MOC, Root Cause Analysis, etc.)

PREFERRED SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES: Process simulation experience (Aspen Plus and/or PD-Plus, hydraulic modeling software) Familiarity with Six Sigma processes Prior experience conducting process plant optimization New product development and scale up
