Through direct engagement with partner operators around the world, the Network Investments – Emerging Markets team seeks to foster the deployment of open access transport networks through shared infrastructure to enable and expand broadband coverage. If you have a passion for working with mobile operators, ISPs and other industry stakeholders to drive innovative, cutting edge and cost efficient network infrastructure, then this is a great role for you!As a Partner Engineer, you will provide technical expertise and leadership in designing and planning the most efficient, cost effective transmission network solutions using fiber and wireless (microwave, mmWave) technologies. You will be hands-on with data analytics and planning tools with the ability to iterate and develop network plans in days instead of weeks or months. You will collaborate closely with Facebook engineering, data science / analytics, product and other cross-functional teams to plan and deploy a new kind of infrastructure.This position is full time and can be based in Johannesburg, ZA or London, UK.

  • Engage with operators and infrastructure partners on a technical level to help them transform their backbone and backhaul networks as well as their businesses.
  • Work with Facebook infrastructure, engineering, data science / analytics and partner teams to create network plans and reference architectures leading to the most scalable and lowest cost per bit deployments connecting the greatest number of towers and POPs.
  • Passionate about helping Facebook’s partners deconstruct and reconstruct networks as part of reimagining the telecom value chain.
  • Support the full lifecycle of network roll-outs from planning through sourcing, contract development and beyond into actual deployment, network acceptance and operational launch.
  • Advocate internally at Facebook and the partner community at large on how to maximize opportunities to successfully deploy new telecom infrastructure across partners.
  • Contribute to development of local, regional and international network strategies aimed at radically reducing the cost of high bandwidth services while simultaneously increasing the fiber network footprint.
  • Assemble presentation materials and other written technical documentation in support of cross-functional communications within Facebook as well as with our external partners
  • Stay abreast of developments in the telecom infrastructure space and share that knowledge with the wider Facebook team.
  • Carrier-scale networks experience (5+ years) in infrastructure development (one or multiple of the following: terrestrial fiber, submarine, wireless backhaul / backbone)
  • Experience working in or with mobile operators, ISPs or equipment vendors on backhaul architecture, engineering or operations or as a design or R&D engineer.
  • Previous experience (3+ years) in data analytics, scripting, GIS planning tools and traffic modeling / network dimensioning.
  • Familiarity with internet user data usage patterns, high bandwidth applications and impact on infrastructure
  • Broad engineering and operational experience with key data and transport network technologies.
  • Least developed / frontier markets experience especially Sub-Saharan Africa.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills including experience speaking to both technical and business audiences. Comfortable interacting with the full spectrum of partner resources from field to C-suite.
  • Comfortable working in a highly collaborative environment and interacting with a globally distributed cross-functional team.
  • BA/BS or higher in an Engineering, Data Science, Computer Science, Maths or equivalent degree / experience.
  • Ability to travel up to 50% of time. International travel is required.
