POSITION: Part Time Jail Deputy- Correctional Officer

DEPARTMENT: Sheriff/Jail

SALARY: up to $16.30 per hour

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

Maintains interior & exterior security of Jail facility, including monitoring surveillance cameras, door controls, meals & visitors, & conducting patrols. Maintains accurate accounting of all inmates. Performs booking procedures of individuals being detained, including photography/video taping, fingerprinting, entering information on computer, receiving & receipting money & personal property, & ensuring inmates are properly showered, changed into jail clothing, & search for weapons & other contraband Performs bonding procedures, including, completing required forms, receiving & receipting bond money, returning personal belongings, & releasing inmates. Periodically notifies victims of domestic violence upon release of related inmates. Escort inmates to/from recreation, visitation, library & meetings in the jail facility, & transports inmates to/from various locations, such as courts, medical appointments, Department of Corrections & other detention facilities. Periodically transports individuals to mental health or other care facilities as ordered by court. Issues/monitors prescribed medications according to physician’s orders, & ensures inmates receive proper medical attention as needed. May administer random drug tests are required. Receives/distributes examines & logs incoming/outgoing mail & personal items for inmates. Conducts routine “shakedowns” of all cells & dormitories for contraband, & prepares written report of findings. Ensures compliance with facility rules & regulations, & records & reports inappropriate behavior to appropriate department personnel. Properly secures &/or physically restrains violent & uncontrollable inmates as situations demand. May supervise & direct activities of Jail Trustees, such as serving meals & doing laundry, including making work assignments & ensuring proper accomplishment of duties. Maintains various records on logs &/or computer, & prepares & submits required reports according to department deadlines. Answers telephone & greet visitors, providing information & assistance, giving tours, taking messages or directing to appropriate individual or department. Responds to inquiries regarding individual inmates & Jail activities. Serves various legal documents as assigned, such as summonses, court orders to appear, & notices of hearings. Delivers returned documents to appropriate individuals/departments as required. Provides courtroom security as assigned. May serve as Training Officer as assigned, including coordinating & providing specialized training activities for department personnel, & maintaining related records. May be given specials assignments, such as operating commissary, including collecting orders & receiving/recording inmate cash & purchases. Periodically responds to inmate grievances following established chain of command procedures. Periodically attends meeting & training sessions as required. Performs related duties as assigned.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

A high school diploma or GED & successful completion of Indiana Law Enforcement School for Correction Officers. Ability to obtain required certifications. Ability to meet all department hiring & retention requirements, including not posing a direct threat to the health & safety of other individuals in the workplace. Working knowledge of & ability to follow & make practical application of customary practices, procedures, rules, regulations & personnel policies of the department. Ability to obey all written & oral orders/directives from department superiors. Ability to appropriately receive, secure & account for articles received in evidence, personal belongings of inmates & monies. Working knowledge of & ability to properly use all assigned department uniforms &/or equipment, including computer, printer, typewriter, calculator, camera, fingerprint equipment, intercom system, radio, telephone, surveillance/monitoring & video cameras, handcuffs, leg irons, restraining, & electric locking devices. Ability to physically perform the essential duties of the position, including, but not limited to, sitting & walking at will, walking/standing &/or sitting for long periods, lifting objects weighing more than 50 pounds, crouching/kneeling, bending at waist, close & far vision, reaching, handling/grasping/fingering objects, hearing sounds/communication, & physically restraining inmates during emergency situations. Ability to deal swiftly, rationally & decisively with potentially violent individuals in precarious situations & perform duties despite the stress of potential injuries &/or loss of life to self &/or others. Ability to de-escalate volatile situations by means of conversation/negotiation. Working knowledge of standard English grammar, spelling & punctuation, & ability to prepare required forms & reports within department deadlines. Ability to maintain confidentiality of department information & reports as required. Ability to effectively listen, comprehend & communicate with co-workers, inmates & their family members, other law enforcement agencies, Department of Corrections, & the public by intercom, radio, telephone or in person, including being sensitive to professional ethics, gender, cultural diversities & disabilities. Ability to work alone or with others in a team environment with minimum supervision. Ability to occasionally work evening, weekend, irregular &/or extended hours & occasionally travel out of town to transport inmates, but not overnight. Possession of a valid driver’s license & demonstrated safe driving record.
