Overseas Security Advisers

The Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO)

promotes the United Kingdom’s interests overseas, supporting our citizens and

businesses around the globe. The FCO has a worldwide network of embassies

and consulates, employing over 14,000 people in nearly 270 diplomatic offices.

We work with international organisations to promote UK interests and global

security, including the EU, NATO, the United Nations, the UN Security

Council and the Commonwealth.

The role of Overseas Security Adviser

Joining a small team, you will deliver specialist

security and risk management advice and recommendations to the FCO’s Head of

Security, Heads of Posts and other departments. Giving security guidance and

assistance, you will determine security policy as a matter of routine and, more

specifically, during crises. From people to buildings, assets and information, you

will be charged with ensuring the FCO is protected from a range of threats,

including espionage, terrorism and crime. You will play a key role in

supporting expeditionary diplomacy enabling the FCO/HMG to project our

diplomatic influence globally, safely establishing new diplomatic Missions in

fragile environments. You will write clear, concise reports to justify your

recommendations and provide advice to a wide selection of people, including

senior level FCO staff, Partners across Government, senior foreign embassy

staff and host nation representatives. You will travel regularly overseas,

around 100 days a year. This is an exciting opportunity to change, impact and

protect the UK from a wide range of threats.

About you

You will most

likely have a career in the military/police force/security services in a

relevant area, such as force protection, intelligence or counter terrorism.

Alternatively, you could have a strong background in security at a large,

international firm or Non-Governmental Organisation. Either way you will have

excellent knowledge of espionage, terrorist and violent attack methodologies

and how to mitigate against potential threats. An innovative problem solver,

you welcome new ideas, methods and challenges and have the ability to plan for

future needs. We would also like to see evidence of your talent for conducting

careful research and rapidly grouping and assimilating key facts, simplifying

complex issues and delivering detailed instructions. It is essential that you

have experience of security work overseas.
