Network Systems Administrator

NATURE OF WORK Under general supervision, performs technical work of considerable difficulty; Network Systems Administrators install, maintain, and troubleshoot infrastructure related servers on the Yuma County network; these servers perform roles such as DNS, DHCP and file sharing, which are vital to daily network operation; such servers may be physical or virtual, and may run either Microsoft Windows or Linux operating systems; the Network Systems Administrator will test and deploy security patches, review log files, and troubleshoot performance issues with a focus on network security; this position reports to the Senior Network Manager.

Example of Work:

(Illustrative Only) Install, maintain and troubleshoot server operating systems; test and deploy security patches and service packs; install and maintain various types of communications equipment including voice, video, and data; troubleshoot issues in a LAN/WAN environment; ensures server availability and performance standards are met; test and analyze security measures in place and make recommendations for improvements; assist in the execution of enterprise IT security policies and procedures in alignment with industry best practices; performs adds, moves, and changes in Microsoft Windows Active Directory; manages user and group mailboxes in Microsoft Exchange; manage file and printer sharing servers in a Microsoft Windows network; must be available to work after-hours, nights, and weekends for special projects as required; researches and evaluates new technologies; assists with development and implementation of system related policies and procedures including security concerns; develops plans for communications systems upgrades, and recommends design changes to improve system performance and reliability; coordinate activities with external organizations and vendors as they provide services to or receive services from the county; review server log files regularly to ensure systems are operating at peak efficiency, and that no problems are going unnoticed; regular and reliable attendance is required; performs other duties as required.

Experience and Education:

Sixty (60) semester hours of post high school coursework from an accredited college or university in computer science, management information systems, or closely related field; AND three (3) years progressively responsible experience in an enterprise server environment based; functioning knowledge of Cisco, Mitel, Microsoft, Linux, VMWare, and ITIL Foundation; working knowledge of security fundamentals in an enterprise environment; operational knowledge of Microsoft Active Directory and Outlook e-mail (Exchange); OR an equivalent combination of education and experience. Preferred Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree, certifications in the following (any or all): Cisco, Mitel, Microsoft, Linux, CompTIA, (Network+ or Security+), VMware, and ITIL Foundation, SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Successful completions of a background check; must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license. Physical Demands and Working Environment: While work is performed in office environment, it may require driving to other facilities; job may require to bending, stooping, crawling, climbing, pushing, pulling, and being able to lift up to 50 pounds.

This position is advertised from the minimum to the mid-point hourly rate. Salary will be determined based on education and experience at the time of offer.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge of: County policies and procedures; hardware and software used in a converged voice/data network; network security practices and principles; network security principles and IT security best practices is important; file shares and permission on NTFS; the product knowledge and technical skills to install server operating systems (i.e. MS Windows Server 2008 and 2012, Linux server) and network applications (i.e. SQL Server) in both physical server and VMware environments; familiar with server virtualization technology.

Skill in: Installation of network components (i.e. switches, routers, wireless access points, etc.); configuration and management of Cisco IOS and JunOS; managing DNS and DHCP servers in an enterprise environment; using standard industry testing equipment to identify quality compliance and system problems; understanding of standard network protocols, such as DNS, DHCP, FTP, SMTP and SSL; managing and maintaining user and group mailboxes in Microsoft Exchange; managing and maintaining user and computer accounts in Microsoft Windows Active Directory; interpersonal skills with emphasis on customer relationships and project management.

Ability to: Interpret a wide variety of technical instructions and diagrams containing both abstract and concrete variables; configure servers for fast, secure, and reliable operation; have good organizational skills and documentation skills; serves in an on-call capacity in case of network failure; lift/carry, push, and pull up to 50 pounds; sit, stand, and/or walk for up to 6 hours per day; bend and/or stoop.
