Network Engineer

The New School seeks a driven, service oriented Network Engineer who will focus on our enterprise wireless network. This engineer will also provide backup and support for others in the networking group in areas such as routing, switching, and other core networking functions. This role requires a hands-on networking background, emphasizing Wi-Fi, routing, and switching. This position is a part of the networking team and reports to the Director of this group.

Role Responsibilities:

  • Engineer, design, and maintain a complicated enterprise wireless (802.11) deployment based on Aruba Networks’ wireless technology.
  • Provide ongoing operational support and troubleshooting of production networking issues, with a strong emphasis on Wi-Fi.
  • Optimize wireless networking throughout the campus environment.
  • Design and validate RF link performance, quality, and reliability.
  • Provide Level-3 training and technical support for the University Service Desk.

Minimum Qualifications:

Required Technical Qualifications:

  • Strong experience with all aspects of Wi-Fi (802.11) operations and implementations at an enterprise level.
  • Strong knowledge of networking protocols and networking theory, with hands on networking experience in a complex enterprise environment.
  • Demonstrated expertise in analyzing and solving complex technical problems.
Required Organizational Qualifications:

  • Ability to see a project through from start to finish, including analysis, design, planning, testing, and implementation.
  • Ability to work in a strong team environment as well as independently.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent documentation skills, using tools such as Visio, Excel, and Word.
  • Ability to work on weekends, early mornings and evenings, as needed.
  • Must work well with multiple parties in Information Technology and other departments on ongoing technology and university initiatives, including new Wi-Fi deployments.

Preferred Qualifications:

Preferred Technical Qualifications:

  • Strong working knowledge of Aruba Networks’ wireless systems, including Aruba wireless controllers, ClearPass, and AirWave
  • Hands on experience with enterprise level routing and switching equipment, preferably Cisco.
  • Experience with Network Access Control systems on an enterprise level.
  • Experience with network management and monitoring tools.
  • Knowledge of cable plant best practices. Racking, stacking, and installing equipment when necessary.
