Network and Computer Systems Administrator I, Student Affairs IT

The Network and Computer Systems Administrator I will manage Information Technology (IT) servers and systems of the division of Enrollment and Student Affairs. This position is responsible for validating and optimizing systems; monitoring and maintaining servers; assisting with server maintenance and upgrades; performing Active Directory administration; develop scripts and automation for Active Directory management; implementing and managing automation processes; assisting with hardware and software testing; implementing and managing virus and other security measures; supporting requests regarding user accounts and permissions; and analyzing needs in order to plan and develop process automation systems and devise new ways to effectively and efficiently use division resources to streamline maintenance processes.

This position will manage the day-to-day maintenance of many Enrollment and Student Affairs servers and systems. This position is responsible for performing daily operations on Enrollment and Student Affairs’ enterprise level systems including, but not limited to: Microsoft Windows and Linux servers; server and desktop virtualization; file storage systems; terminal services; printing services; client imaging and provisioning system; thin client management system; systems monitoring and notification; backup systems; scheduled jobs; active directory management; Windows file permissions, and group policy objects.

This position reports to the Enrollment and Student Affairs IT Senior Systems Engineer and works with other Enrollment and Student Affairs IT staff to conduct in-depth testing, diagnose problems, and to implement technology solutions for the Division of Enrollment and Student Affairs. This position is responsible for documenting work and providing coworker training to minimize risks associated with staff turnover and absences; mentoring and serving as a point of escalation for the Enrollment and Student Affairs IT student technicians; and collaborating with other UM staff to implement, maintain, and follow operational and security policies and standards for the Division of Enrollment and Student Affairs and the University of Montana.

This position requires incumbent to develop working knowledge of State and Federal regulations including Section 504 of the American Rehabilitation Act, HIPAA, HITECH, FERPA, and other regulatory standards such as PCI DSS; develop research skills to gather, analyze and organize information to generate meaningful solutions to complex problems; develop familiarity managing virtual computing environments including server virtualization, as well as desktop and application virtualization, especially in Citrix XenServer and Citrix XenApp; and develop the ability to write and maintain batch files, bash scripts, and Powershell scripts.

Required Skills

Extensive knowledge of operating systems and servers including: Windows Server and Desktop; and Linux, primarily CentOS.

Ability to use standard office and administration tools, such as: Microsoft Office Suite; Active Directory tools; Command line and console interaction; Remote Desktop Connection tools; and IP KVM.

Experience developing, implementing and maintaining security and access policies and profiles for applications, network shares, files, printers, workstations, firewall, and network access.

Demonstrated experience administrating server/data backup solutions.

Ability to update and maintain scripts.

Familiarity with system monitoring and inventorying solutions.

Experience planning for, performing, and testing disaster recovery scenarios.

Demonstrated ability to effectively troubleshoot end-user issues as well as back-end systems.

Demonstrated ability to adapt to changes in client needs as well as policies and procedures.

Ability to communicate technical details effectively with lay users in person, over the phone, and in writing.

Ability to fully and effectively document implementations according to office standards.

Demonstrated ability to rapidly learn and implement new technologies.

Demonstrated ability to self-organize and manage work time and multiple priorities.

Ability to understand division’s requirements and goals and translate those Into sustainable solutions.

Must be able to work at a computer workstation for extended hours.

Ability to occasionally work weekends, evenings, holidays and be on-call.

Ability to travel and to attend workshops, conferences and other required continuing education and training.

Minimum Required Experience

Associate Degree (in Information Technology, or other related field) and one (1) year experience administering and managing enterprise level servers and supporting technology and business solutions end to end, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Information Systems, or other related education and/or significant experience

Citrix Certified Associate – Virtualization (CCA-V) Certification

Microsoft Certified Solutions Associate – Windows Server Certification

Familiarity with configuration management systems, such as Puppet

Endpoint management system experience, such as LANDesk

Experience managing virtual computing environments including server virtualization, as well as desktop and application virtualization

Possess knowledge, skills, and abilities required to serve as upper-tier support when issues are escalated from other Enrollment and Student Affairs IT staff

Ability to manage and install SSL certificates
