This position will operate within the Veteran Transportation Service (VTS) program as part of the VA Connecticut Health Care System. This position is a VTS Motor Vehicle Operator in the Patient Transportation Department, located in Health Administration Service of the Business Office. The Motor Vehicle Operator will provide transportation to Veterans of the VA Connecticut Health Care System. Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Drives one or more types of passenger vehicles, which can carry up to 8 or more passengers
  • Drives predetermined and/or scheduled routes or special runs
  • Provides non-emergent, safe transportation of eligible Veterans and cargo
  • Provides preventative maintenance of patient transport vehicles and performs daily inspection of vehicle
  • Maintains a daily manifest of Veterans transported via the Patient Transportation Department
  • Arrives at and departs from pick-up and discharge points at scheduled times
  • Enforces passenger seatbelt use
  • Verifies I.D. cards to ensure authorization of passengers as required
  • When transporting patients, must be able to load and unload patient in a safe manner
  • Listens to concerns and provides the customer with information needed or points them in the right direction for assistance

Work Schedule: Mon-Fri 8:00am-4:30pm and 9:00am-5:30pm

Your background must demonstrate experience in a variety of Motor Vehicle Operator duties, such as operating a motor vehicle in all types of weather conditions, maintaining motor vehicles and providing customer service.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidencewhich demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the questions. The screen-out element for this position is the ability to do the job of a Motor Vehicle Operator.

SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTOR: Must possess a valid state driver’s license

Physical Effort / Requirements: Light physical effort in reaching, bending, turning or moving hands, arms, feet and legs to operate hand and foot controls. Moderate physical effort in the frequent handling of objects weighting up to 40 pounds. Considerable physical efforts may be required to change tires and make limited emergency repairs, such as installing an emergency fan belt or replacing an electrical fuse on open highways.

Patient transport vehicle driver must be able to assist patients into and out of the vehicle, which involves physical exertion and frequent stooping, bending and lifting of patients. Driver must also be able to load and assist wheelchair patients, often with no assistance.

Working Conditions: Employee works mostly outside, is exposed to dirt and fumes, and to the possibility of cuts and bruises and broken bones as a result of accidents while driving or from falling objects when loading and unloading the vehicle.

Operates vehicle in all types of traffic and weather on public roads (or the equivalent), and is exposed to the danger of serious accidents.

Employee will drive in heavy traffic and at highway speeds over complicated road and interchange systems.
