Linux System (NOC) Engineer

Junior/Mid-Level Linux Systems NOC Engineer

As an agile, fast growing company this job description isn’t meant to be a complete list of your qualifications or all the things you’ll do. We are looking for a fast learner who is willing to go the extra mile to get a project done and keep the systems happy. If that sounds like you read on..

About You

  • You have the passion to “do server infrastructure management right”
  • A minimum of 4 years of production Centos Linux system administration experience.
  • A minimum of 2 years experience using configuration management tools (Puppet / Ansible). You do not need to be an expert that can write modules or playbooks, but you should have used one of these tools to do production deployments and have basic troubleshooting skills to correct deployment issues.
  • A minimum of 2 years experience monitoring large-scale deployments
  • Strong working knowledge of Python and Ruby – Not looking for a rock star scripter, but we do need someone who says “I can script that process!”
  • Experience with virtualization systems: AWS and XenServer. We are currently using AWS for our international data center locations. All US based data center are built in Equinix data centers using XenServer 7.
  • You’ve “carried the pager” before & have first-hand experience with what happens when infrastructure / tools fail in the middle of the night and you’re on call.
  • You are a self-starter who works well independently and in a group. The team is very diverse with a wide background and experience in technology. To fit it, you will be a person that can listen, learn, and share with the senior team members.
  • You have great communication skills with the ability to work asynchronously with a large team. Don’t expect to absolutely know what each day’s tasks will be. They can and often do change at a moment’s notice. You should be able to context switch quickly.
  • You’ve worked in SaaS environments with more than 50 servers. You understand that customers are our lifeblood and that when a customer leaves because they are unhappy or not satisfied we lose big time. You should hate to lose more than anything else!
  • You read up on and experiment with new technologies because it’s in your nature, not because it’s a job requirement
  • You don’t just learn how things work, you also learn why.
  • Familiarity with CDN networks and for bonus points you have a personal/hobby website using a CDN that you set up and configured.
  • You have deep understanding of the HTTP protocol and how to debug HTTP issues using standard tools like curl and tcpdump

Some of the many daily tasks you will do:

  • Take personal responsibility for the availability and reliability of our service by monitoring the production infrastructure for stability and performance in order to maintain 24x7x365 operations
  • Use configuration management tools to interact with and manage Yottaa infrastructure
  • Identify key system metrics and ensure adequate monitoring coverage for new and existing services, leveraging lessons learned while providing front-line response
  • Support our existing production systems while also finding ways to improve it.
  • Work on our server image configurations, collaborating with other engineers to optimize for task performance, reliability, failover and scale
  • Participate in production and staging Xen datacenter builds and management

Minimum Requirements

  • Typical candidates have a BS degree in a computer related field or equivalent experience in a related field.
  • Demonstrate a working knowledge of CentOS internals (file systems, storage, process lifecycle, etc…).
  • Demonstrate a working knowledge of basic Linux command line system health diagnostic tools.
  • Demonstrate a working knowledge of of a TCP/IP network environment and use of common tools to debug network issues
  • Demonstrate a working knowledge using Puppet automation for deployment operations
  • Demonstrate a working knowledge of management of EC2 and Xen infrastructure virtual instances including firewall(iptables) and disk provisioning.
  • Demonstrate a working knowledge of source control (git and github)
  • Ability to demonstrate a working knowledge and experience in writing scripts using ruby and bash
