Linux System Administrator

About Us:
Generic Network Systems (GNS) is a top-tier, boutique managed services/hosting company primarily for investment firms. We manage servers all over the world from our NYC and Portland, Oregon offices. We have an excellent reputation for our proactive support.

We provide expert systems administration for client-owned servers, servers in the GNS private cloud (consisting of 7 collocation sites) and servers in the Amazon Web Services cloud.

We are looking for a Unix Systems Administrator who will work in our fast paced team environment providing support, design and development for our data centers. The ideal candidate must be a self-starter possessing sound judgement, strong problem solving skills and able to communicate effectively with a broad range of audiences.

Responsibilities:

• Day-to-day server support for clients from our office in Midtown Manhattan.
• Build, upgrade and maintain servers on Solaris and Linux platforms.
• Write, maintain and improve automation scripts in Perl, BASH, PHP & Python.
• Troubleshoot client/server application issues.
• Work with clients to troubleshoot technical problems.
• MySQL, Postgres and Oracle maintenance.

Requirements:

• 2-7 years experience with UNIX servers, in a system administration capacity.
• Experience configuring and managing diverse applications in production environments.
• Experience with SQL-based database technology; Oracle, Postgres or MySQL.
• An understanding of network applications including: DNS, IIS, Apache, backup software.
• Programming/scripting experience in real-world environments.
• Degree in Computer Science or science-related field.
• Good problem-solving ability and interested in learning.
• Excellent communication skills.

Extra consideration will be given to candidates with the following:

• Experience with Windows Servers, VMWare and SQL Server.
• Experience with Solaris Containers, KVM, Xen and SAN/NAS devices.
• Familiarity with Windows Powershell..
• Expertise in Plan9 or Minix.
