Lead Database Admin NYCT

Databases are the primary information repositories for major computer systems at NYC Transit. This position manages the database administrators responsible for the creation, tuning, and ongoing maintenance and support of 150+ Oracle, IBM DB2, and CA-IDMS databases residing on mainframe, UNIX midrange, and Windows platforms in production and non-production environments.

Responsibilities

Install the Oracle Database Engine and Oracle Gateways. Upgrade to new release levels. Apply bug and security patches.

Manage planning, creating, upgrading and patching Oracle databases. Interface with end user departments, applications managers, and hardware support groups in these efforts when necessary.

Manage logical design and perform integrity checks of the IBM Mainframe databases (e.g. TALON).

Monitor database performance on a day-to-day basis and tune as necessary. Monitor disk space utilization.

Copy/clone production databases to non-production environments to support application testing.

Ensure that backup and recovery procedures minimize data loss in the event of hardware failure while also minimizing application down time.

Perform real-time diagnostics and corrective maintenance for supported software. Assist application developers with database-related issues when necessary.

Meet with Oracle sales representatives on software support renewals. Provide licensing and maintenance pricing information to NYCT procurement groups. Track Oracle quarterly invoices and payments. Manage database license usage.

Coordinate training and technical seminars for team members.

Recruit, develop, motivate, train, and retain a diverse and high performing team of database professionals while conforming to budgetary objectives and Human Resources policy and programs.

Participate in the development and execution of database disaster recovery and business continuity plans.

Document all supported production and non-production databases providing detailed information on the database server and system/database attributes etc.

Qualifications

Successful track record of performance and oversight of design, construction, implementation, and maintenance of large, high-performance, high-reliability database systems in Oracle, DB2, and IDMS.

Knowledge of database industry technology and trends.

Extensive experience planning for high-availability and disaster recovery of database systems.

Experience maintaining division of responsibilities particularly among applications, database administration, and hardware support to ensure the smooth and continuous operation of databases.

Good verbal and written communication skills.

Planning and organizational skills to direct and/or direct tracking of characteristics of hundreds of databases to ensure that any member of a database team is able to effectively support each database if and when required.

Education and Experience

A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college in Computer Science, Business Administration, Engineering, Finance, Information Services (or the equivalent of education and progressive responsible experience) plus a minimum of 3-6 years of Information Technology experience with at least three years of progressive managerial/supervisory experience.

Required 5 years of experience with Oracle Database Administration in UNIX and Windows environments.

Desirable 5 years of experience managing IBM DB2 and CA-IDMS relational databases.
