Lab Assistant

The Oglethorpe University Natural Sciences Division is searching for a full-time staff member starting in September 2018 to assist Biology, Chemistry and Physics faculty in the management and teaching of undergraduate laboratories and field studies and in the support of faculty-led research.

Oglethorpe is a small, highly selective, independent, private university located on a beautiful, 100-acre campus in Atlanta. Our classical liberal arts mission serves a diverse student body of approximately 1,300 undergraduates. The campus is near Atlanta’s famous Buckhead neighborhood; using the Oglethorpe University MARTA rail station, it is a 10-minute ride to the Midtown Arts district and a 15-minute ride to downtown Atlanta. Oglethorpe’s distinguished faculty is composed of teachers/scholars committed to providing the highest quality instruction to students.

The responsibilities of the Lab Coordinator will include managing division-wide ordering and organization of stockrooms, maintaining equipment, preparing lab experiments and classroom activities, coordinating field trips and field-based research logistics and developing chemical disposal and safety compliance policies. The position will also include teaching in labs, when appropriate, and developing co-curricular programming for STEM undergrads. Applicants should have facility using computers and computer networks; he/she should be skilled in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. He/She should also have strong written and verbal communication skills and a capacity to work collaboratively with a variety of people of different professional ranks. Applicants should have clean driving records and be prepared to help with student transport using University vans.

Qualifications

M.S. in a discipline in the Natural Sciences, preferably having completed a research thesis in Physics, Chemistry, Biology or a related field. Applicants must have completed graduate or undergraduate coursework in at least one other science discipline outside of his/her field of expertise. A record of prior successful experience as a laboratory teaching assistant and/or laboratory work study student is highly desirable.

Compensation
Full-time employment (12 months/year) with benefits.

Starting and Ending Dates
The position will start in September 2018 (the actual start date will be negotiated during the interview process).
