Highway Maintenance Worker (Bridge Crew with Winter Maintenance)

This position is responsible for maintaining and repairing bridges and concrete structures on the State highway system. Duties may include, but are not limited to cleaning or brooming concrete approach slabs, bridge decks, joints, drainage devices, structural members, expansion devices, bent caps, abutment seats and other bridge parts; repairing concrete surface (e.g., decks, approach slabs, box culvert floors or other types of structural surface, etc.) defects; treating surface of concrete bridge decks, curb and gutter, and barrier rails with silanes and other sealers to provide waterproofing; sealing cracks in concrete surfaces (e.g., decks, approaches, concrete bent caps, columns, box culverts, etc.) using epoxy-based or other approved sealants; repairing structural concrete that requires forming and/or placing steel (e.g., full-depth deck repair, wing wall repair, curb repair, bent caps, or grout pads) using low slump concrete or commercially approved mixes; performing miscellaneous structure repairs (e.g., down-spout repair, joint or seal repair, painting and any steel repair including coring, cleaning, welding, or painting steel girders, bearing plates, rails, etc.); cleaning, repairing, maintaining or replacing (e.g., placement and maintenance of culvert makers; control density slurry; maintenance of slopes, ditches, berms, rip raps, channels, and banks; rock slide cleanup; repair and maintenance of erosion area in preparation for mulching, fertilizing, seeding, sodding, placing of fiber glass roving, jute mesh, flumes, downspouts; and other drainage and erosion operations) any in-kind drain, gutter, pipe box culvert, cattle pass, drop inlet or other drainage and erosion control structure; performing support operations in the completion of the National Bridge Inspection (NBI) to ensure compliance with National Bridge Inspection Standards (NBIS); performing inspections and calibrating, maintaining, and repairing trucks and equipment within established scheduled maintenance requirements to extend the life of the equipment; maintaining and repairing department facilities and properties to provide functionality and aesthetics; and performing winter maintenance to allow public mobility and provide safety for users of the State highway system.

From approximately May 1 to September 30, the anticipated work schedule for this position is 10-hour days, 4 days per week from Monday through Thursday each week. From approximately October 1 – April 30, the anticipated work schedule for this position is eight-hour days, Monday through Friday. Night and shift work will be required, including working weekend hours and holidays during emergencies and inclement weather. In-state travel with overnights stays during the summer months may be required.

Work assignments are frequently performed outside in all weather conditions and around highway traffic.


Incumbent must have a valid driver’s license and be able to obtain a Class A commercial driver’s license (CDL) with no transmission restrictions within 60 days of hire date to retain employment. Employee will be subject to pre-employment, random, reasonable-suspicion, post-accident, follow up, and return-to-duty drug and alcohol testing.

Certification in one or more areas is required within the first year of employment. Further certification areas will be determined by the supervisor according to job responsibility and needs. Required certifications must be maintained for continued employment. Classes and training in the certification areas are provided through the Department of Transportation.

Incumbent must be willing and able to report to work for inclement weather conditions and other highway emergencies; and must be able to report to their home station within 30 minutes, under normal driving conditions, from the time of notification.

According to SDCL 32-12A, applicants will be required to authorize the Department of Transportation to obtain a complete driving record.

The Ideal Candidate Will Have:

Experience in the operation of highway equipment and/or experience in construction is preferred.

Knowledge of:

  • concrete repair techniques and materials (desirable but not require);
  • preventative maintenance on equipment and vehicles;
  • basic computer operation.

Skill to:

  • operate and maintain skid loader, telehandler, forklift and a vehicle with a trailer attached (desirable but not required);
  • operate and maintain jackhammer, concrete tools, chain saws, skill saw (desirable but not required);
  • operate various hand tools;
  • perform basic mathematical computations to make precise measurements and determine rates of materials.

Ability to:

  • work cooperatively with others and promote a friendly work climate in order to achieve shared goals;
  • display a high level of effort and commitment towards completing assignments and goals;

  • walk, sit and stand for extended periods of time;
  • routinely reach, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl;
  • walk long distances over many kinds of terrain; animals, reptiles, and insects are a factor;
  • specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, distance vision, depth perception, peripheral vision and ability to focus;
  • work at high heights occasionally.
