Graduate Engineer – Transportation Construction

Hennepin County’s Transportation Project Delivery Department is seeking a Graduate Engineer – Transportation Construction. This entry-level professional position provides assistance in contract administration for roadway projects and management of consultant contracts, while reporting to a Senior Professional Engineer in the Transportation Department’s Construction Division. The Transportation Project Delivery Department administers all functions associated with the county highway system. This department develops and maintains a safe, efficient, balanced, and environmentally sound highway system throughout Hennepin County. The Hennepin County Public Works facility is located at 1600 Prairie Drive, Medina, Minnesota. There is no public transportation to this facility.

The primary duties and responsibilities of this position include:

  • Assist in the review of preliminary layouts and detail roadway plans for capital projects.
  • Assist in the review of engineering analysis, drainage calculations, structural analysis, special provisions, environmental documents, pavement design calculations, and cost estimates for roadway projects.
  • Assist the project engineer on selected in-house and consultant administered and inspected projects.
  • Provide input on matters of the division’s policies and procedures.
  • Provide guidance and direction to consultants hired by the county and act as liaison between the county and municipalities.
  • Provide engineering guidance to technical staff and consultants.

Best Qualified Candidates will have:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in civil engineering or other engineering field appropriate to the position.
  • Registration as an Engineer in Training with a State Board of Registration or the ability to acquire registration within six (6) months of hire.
  • A valid driver’s license.
  • Experience with:
    • Construction inspection, construction observation, construction administration, and/or surveying.
    • Transportation design functions such as preparing roadway drainage calculations.
    • Preparing and/or reviewing environmental documents for roadway projects.
    • Preparing and/or analyzing pavement thickness design criteria, structural analysis, traffic analysis, cost estimating, Computer Aided Design (CAD), and/or GIS.
  • Ability to:
    • Exhibit high levels of organization and attention to documentation needs.
    • Assist in the oversight of transportation construction projects under the direction of a senior professional engineer.
    • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other county, federal, state and municipal staff, public officials, and the general public.
    • Coordinate work with county and contract staff for successful project completion.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
