Global Media and Public Relations Representative

The South Dakota Department of Tourism works to maximize Tourism’s impact on South Dakota’s economy by increasing domestic and international travel to the state. The Global Media & Public Relations team specifically uses proactive approaches to work with journalists, freelance writers and the media to tell the South Dakota travel story. Excellent communication skills are needed and required in order for the candidate to be successful in this role. A background in communication and/or public relations is helpful. In-state and out-of-state travel will be frequent.

Travel is required. Lifting of 30-50 pounds will be necessary.

This position is exempt from the Civil Service Act.

The Ideal Candidate Will Have:
Bachelor’s degree in public relations, mass communication, marketing or related field is preferred; and experience interacting with and working with people in a team environment.

Knowledge of:
basic operating systems on a computer;

AP writing style;

in-depth knowledge of South Dakota’s culture, history, and destinations.

Skill to:
develop press releases, itineraries and other content to serve the media;

develop professional relationships with members of the media;

host group and individual familiarization tours across the state.

Ability to:
use time management skills effectively;

balance multiple projects at once;

utilize excellent communication skills;

thrive in a team environment;

work effectively and efficiently as an individual;

communicate information clearly and concisely;

utilize softwares to publish content online;

speak publicly.
