The GIS Analyst will plan for and implement all aspects of Audubon California (ACA)’s GIS-related projects including facilitating project teams, identifying resources and establishing project objectives, timelines and milestones. S/He will serve as a resource and provide training to staff and chapters regarding the GIS tools available to them through Audubon’s partnership with Esri. S/He will work closely with science and conservation staff in Coastal, Marine, Working Lands, and Important Bird Areas programs to provide essential GIS support.

Essential Functions:

  • Administer, coordinate and manage GIS activities for Audubon California and assist with projects in the Pacific Flyway;
  • Manage GIS projects, budgets and contracts;
  • Assist with biological data collection, data sharing, and data management;
  • Design and perform spatial analysis using ESRI tools including Spatial Analyst and ArcGIS Online;
  • Author reports detailing geospatial methods and analyses;
  • Promote effective and efficient visualization of geospatial information through cartographic design, which may include using web-based applications such as ArcGIS Online and Google Maps;
  • Work with a team of conservation professionals within Audubon, and with outside organizations such as other NGOs and state and federal agencies;
  • Create GIS internship program, train, and supervise interns;
  • Provide GIS support and training to Audubon staff and chapters as needed;
  • Prepare grants for projects related to GIS;
  • Maintain expertise and stay current in the GIS field by attending meetings, conferences, reviewing relevant literature, and participating in relevant listservs and/or academic societies.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Master’s Degree (and/or Bachelor’s Degree and GIS certificate) in environmental studies, ecology, biology, geography or a related field. Experience may be considered in lieu of education.
  • Strong preference for individuals with knowledge of western birds and bird conservation issues in California.
  • 2+ years’ of applied GIS experience and at least one year of program management.
  • Experience with ESRI software, specifically the ArcGIS suite (ArcInfo, ArcView, ArcCatalog, ArcToolbox) and Esri’s extensions (Spatial Analyst, 3D Analyst). Demonstrated cartographic (map design) experience, geospatial modelling and statistical analysis.
  • Proficiency with Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and other key Microsoft Office and web-based products.
  • Strong leadership, mentoring, and team-building skills.
  • Proven record in project management including managing grants, completing reports, contracts, articles and other assignments.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, partners, outside agencies, and the general public.
  • Ability to work across disciplines and build solutions for users of a varying skill level; must have strong communication skills and be able to partner with leaders across the Audubon network
  • Ability to think strategically and creatively, while managing multiple tasks, meeting deadlines and operating in a dynamic, fast‐paced environment.
