  • An Overview

    The Gang Prevention & Intervention Coordinator serves as the City’s staff liaison to the Senior Policy Gang Intervention Committee and the Community Gang Task Force for gang prevention programs and services provided by non-profit, faith-based, community and public entities. Coordinator provides extensive coordination and contact and outreach with the local, regional and state governments, the community, community leaders, and with City departments and agencies is required. This position receives general supervision from the Director of Juvenile & Domestic Relations Court Service Unit.

    What You Should Bring

    The ideal candidate should have a thorough knowledge of public administration and social work in relation to gang intervention and prevention programs, a thorough knowledge of Federal, State and local laws, policies, and best practices pertaining to gang intervention; a thorough knowledge of the nature and causes of gang formation, gang culture, gang violence, and gang organizations; good knowledge of the criminal justice system; good knowledge of the community and its needs, the ability to collect, analyze, interpret and prepare data, and the ability to utilize data to evaluate programs and the community’s needs; the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with officials, employees, the public and with persons of various social, cultural, or economic backgrounds; and the ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing.

    The Opportunity

    • Serves as Coordinator for the Gang Prevention Community Gang Task Force and Senior Policy Group on Gangs; overseeing, acting on and carrying out the development, implementation, and program execution of its best-practice initiatives;
    • Serves on the the Northern Virginia Regional Gang Task Force Gang Response Intervention Team and collaborates with other jurisdictions. Oversees and carries out the investigation, support, enhancement and development of various best-practice gang-mitigation programs, such as needs assessments and services; grant research, application, oversight; regional multi-media Public Service Announcement campaign and follow-up; sports opportunities and training.
    • Oversees the development, implementation, oversight and monitoring of the Gang Intervention, Prevention and Education Program and related intervention activities;
    • Gathers, monitors and provides up-to-date local, regional, and national gang –related information to public and private organizations, parents, youth, elected officials, government leadership and other community members and groups.
    • Acts as the single-point of contact for educational outreach, inquiries, and responses to individuals or groups through one-on-one/group outreach, consultation and public appearances on a local, regional and national level – including website development and follow-up
    • Coordinates and/or oversees coordination of the Alexandria Mentoring Partnership (AMP).
    • Performs related work as required.

    About the Department

    The Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court Service Unit (CSU) provides services to youth and families involved in the juvenile court system. Functions of the CSU include intake, probation and parole; domestic relations complaints including custody, visitation and child support; protective orders; family mediation and therapy; and crime prevention programs.

    MINIMUM & ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

    Four Year College Degree with course work in public administration and management practices, criminal justice, psychology or sociology or a related field of study; Considerable progressive experience and significant knowledge of public administration and social work, particularly related to the administration of gang intervention and prevention programs; applicable Federal, State and local laws, policies, procedures, and best-management practices pertaining to gang prevention and intervention, specifically the Office of Juvenile Justice & Delinquency Prevention’s Comprehensive Gang Model; the nature, causes and risk factors of gang formation, gang culture, gang violence, and gang organizations and the protective factors to mitigate the threat of gangs; the collection, analysis, interpretation, preparation and communication of data, with an ability to utilize data in order to evaluate programs and the community’s needs; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with top management municipal, State and Federal officials, employees, the public and with persons of various social, cultural, or economic backgrounds; and the ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

    Master’s Degree; five years of experience and thorough knowledge of/in the criminal justice system, with at least two years of direct experience working with troubled youth and their families, the community and its needs in order to develop and coordinate resources and programs; knowledge and experience related to the administration of gang intervention and prevention programs; applicable Federal, State and local laws, policies, procedures, and best-management practices pertaining to gang prevention and intervention (specifically the Office of Juvenile Justice & Delinquency Prevention’s Comprehensive Gang Model); specific local and regional information pertaining to gang activity; facilitation, mediation and other activities designed to bring parties together to facilitate solutions to groups having different interests; planning, developing, evaluating, and managing at-risk youth programs; working with the media. Bilingual Spanish/English language proficiency preferred.
