OCSD is currently looking to fill the role of a Facilities Worker/Painter.

Under general supervision, the Facilities Worker/Painter performs a variety of full journey-level interior and exterior painting functions on District equipment and structures including walls, buildings, pipes, pumps, tanks and vehicles using brushes, rollers, and sprayers and other applicators; mixes and blends paints according to established guidelines; applies primers, paints, and other materials on equipment and structures; and assists in moving and arranging furniture. This individual will be responsible for applying surface preparation to wood, metal, fiberglass, plaster, and drywall using surface preparation techniques such as washing, scraping, sanding, sand blasting, water blasting, steam cleaning, and the use of acids, solvents, rust inhibitors and cleaning agents. This person will erect and use scaffolding, aerial lifts, scissor lifts, and ladders as required.

This individual will also design, fabricate, hang, mount, apply and install various types of signage required throughout the facilities to include traffic, office, and safety signage. The candidate will be involved in inspecting District equipment and structures, planning assigned jobs, and estimating the time, materials, and equipment required to complete jobs. This person will be required to perform all duties in a safe and effective manner, ensuring a safe work environment for self and others by inspecting worksite for any safety hazards or obstacles and adhering to safe work practices and procedures.

Qualifications & Requirements:

The successful candidate will have a high school diploma (or equivalent) supplemented by specialized training in painting or a related field, and two (2) years of journey level experience preparing various coating materials and applying to a wide variety of interior and exterior surfaces. An Associate’s degree or Bachelor’s degree, plus knowledge and/or experience in the field of industrial coating are desired. The ability to work in a planned maintenance environment is needed. The selected candidate must be able to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing, along with the ability to plan and organize work to meet changing priorities and deadlines. The ability to perform arduous work including lifting a minimum of 40 pounds is required. The ability to operate a computer and applicable software, to include fabricating signage using sign making equipment is necessary. Possession of, or the ability to obtain a valid California class “C” driver’s license is required.

Hiring Salary Range: *$30.84 – $33.98 per hour

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Must possess mobility to work in and around District buildings and facilities, to operate a motor vehicle and drive on surface streets; strength, stamina, and mobility to perform light to medium physical work, to work in confined spaces and around machines, to climb and descend ladders, and to operate varied hand and power tools and equipment; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone or radio. The job involves fieldwork requiring frequent walking in operational areas to identify problems or hazards. Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or calculator and to operate above-mentioned tools and equipment. Positions in this classification bend, stoop, kneel, reach, and climb to perform work and inspect work sites. Employees must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects weighing a minimum of 40 pounds, or heavier weights with the use of proper equipment.

Environmental Elements
Employees work in and around buildings and facilities and are exposed to loud noise levels, cold and hot temperatures, inclement weather conditions, road hazards, vibration, confining workspace, chemicals, mechanical and/or electrical hazards, and hazardous physical substances and fumes. Employees may interact with upset staff and/or public and private representatives and contractors in interpreting and enforcing departmental policies and procedures.

DISASTER SERVICE WORKERS
All Orange County Sanitation District employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employment with the Orange County Sanitation District requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.
