Job overview and responsibilities

The Staff Representative Operations Engineer works closely with the Lead Operations Engineer and supports the Sr. Operations Engineers in their work. The Staff Operations Engineer works under the guidance of a lead or senior engineer to develop all aspects of aircraft performance related to an assigned fleet, including takeoff and landing performance, Weight and balance system development, enroute performance, drift down, terrain clearance, depressurization, MEL performance effects, ETOPS, Development of performance data in support of the company flight manual, responsibility for aircraft performance in Sabre Flight Planner, development and update of aircraft performance factors for flight planning, development of payload analysis in support of the Network Planning and Charter departments, and support of all internal and external customers in the interpretation and analysis of aircraft performance data. The Staff engineer, under the guidance of a lead or Senior engineer, will also be responsible for maintaining and developing airport and obstacle data, including NOTAM information and special engine-out departure procedures, for assigned airports.

Manages Airport and Obstacle Data, including NOTAMS, for assigned airports under the guidance of the fleet lead engineer

  • May attend airport construction meetings as assigned
  • Under guidance of a Senior or Lead Engineer, Develops Special Engine Out Procedures to maximize available payload for assigned fleet while respecting normal cockpit procedures
  • Monitors and evaluates airport and obstacle source information to ensure validity of takeoff and landing weights
  • Monitors and updates airport and obstacle information per source NOTAM
Under guidance of a Senior or Lead Engineer, maintains and supports all aspects of Aircraft Performance and related data for United Airlines on assigned Fleet under the guidance of the fleet Lead Engineer
  • Provides and updates all Performance and related Limitations in company flight manuals
  • Assists in the development of materials for “planning and performance manual” to support backup dispatch/load planning procedures
  • Learns and assists in the development of Payload and route analysis in support of Network Planning requests
  • Assists in development of performance penalties for UA MEL to support Unimatic/Sabre Flight Planner
  • Assists in the testing, and evaluation of new performance data loads to Sabre Flight Planner, including new SCAP data loads.Helps develop MEL performance corrections in coordination with MEL engineers, and Sabre Flight Planner requirements
  • Helps create fleet specific Terrain Clearance/Drift Down/Depressurization procedures
Develops and Maintains Weight and Balance System under guidance of Lead or Senior Engineer
  • Assists in developing weight and balance system for assigned fleet as required by interior configuration changes, or policy and procedures changes
  • Assists in providing support to Load Planning on Weight and Balance issues, including the interpretation of system problems, passenger/bag weight surveys, tail tip avoidance procedures, etc.
  • Maintains and updates aircraft running weight records per applicable Advisory Circular requirements
  • Monitors and coordinates aircraft weight changes with Tech Ops Engineering
Required
  • Engineering degree from an accredited University
  • Must have knowledge of and interest in, Aircraft Performance Engineering
  • 2 years of experience in airline flight operations engineering or related area targeted to a specific United Airlines fleet
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship
  • Successful completion of interview required to meet job qualifications
  • Reliable, punctual attendance is an essential function of the position
Preferred
  • Aerospace Engineering degree with Boeing and/or Airbus Performance Training
  • Experience in Aircraft Performance Engineering
  • Specific experience in one discipline of aircraft performance engineering, including: Aircraft W&B system development including OEW change tracking; Flight Planning/en-route performance; Airport Analysis with Special Departure Procedure development; Aircraft Performance Data Development to support Company Flight Manuals, Dispatch and Load Planning; MEL Performance adjustments; Terrain Clearance/Driftdown/Depressurization
