Electrical Engineer, London

The Role

We have an opportunity for a talented Electrical Building Services Engineer who can demonstrate the competences associated with being about to submit their application for Chartered Engineer status with the Engineering Council. You will be articulate, technically strong and able to evidence your ability to understand the commercial environment in which we operate. Demonstrable experience in managing change through projects and site related activity would be a key advantage.

As an Engineer you will have a significant impact on the day to day operation of your projects and also the wider electrical team. You will be expected to manage the electrical design on your projects, arranging for and managing the output of technical resources. Your output will be the electrical design for your projects which will involve sketches – both electronic and hand drawn – and production of drawings, reports and specifications. You will be expected to develop relationships with your project team both internally and externally and as such your communication and team working skills will be paramount.

Our projects are often developed in collaboration with signature architects leading to an eclectic project portfolio. While we typically operate in the commercial and mixed-use sectors, our portfolio includes the arts and cultural sector, sports venues, rail and airport buildings and refurbishment works for long standing clients. We also work within the developer-led residential, commercial and mixed use sectors and we have particular experience in delivering tall buildings.

Key responsibilities:

  • Lead electrical input on projects
  • You will be responsible for the production of the electrical design on your projects and as such will be accountable both to project leaders and the electrical discipline within the business.
  • Present and discuss our emerging designs to our clients and collaborators
  • Manage input on your projects to ensure production of deliverables to agreed timelines and within budget
  • Provide technical guidance and mentoring to junior team members
  • Forecast time requirements to deliver relevant high quality output
  • Undertake electrical design elements for projects of varying scales
  • Work closely with Clients, Contractors and Architects
  • Manage the production of drawings
  • Prepare and co-ordinate electrical reports and specifications
  • Attend meetings and communicate with clients to establish their needs
  • Development of internal and external project team relationships

About You

Skills and Capabilities

Essential:

  • Proven understanding of the theory underpinning electrical building services
  • Demonstrate a passion for electrical engineering, a flair for electrical engineering design, and a practical understanding of buildings
  • Working knowledge of relevant British Standards and applicable regulations
  • An appreciation of BIM processes and a willingness to develop your knowledge and experience in this field
  • Be degree qualified in Electrical Engineering
  • Be working towards achieving Chartered Engineer status via the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) in the next 6 to 12 months
  • Proven experience in the field of electrical design and experience across a range of building types, including high rise, mixed use developments and transport (rail and air) related buildings
  • Ability to design and document electrical engineering solutions on major and/or complex projects
  • Ability to spatially coordinate building services across a multi-disciplinary team and develop clear layouts and geometry to support discussions with the wider design team
  • Proven design experience of low and medium voltage distribution systems, including transformers, generators, uninterruptible power supplies and main electrical distribution systems.
  • Up-to-date knowledge and experience in Electrical Building Load Assessments, Standby Generation and UPS, Electrical distribution systems, Fire/voice alarm and security systems, Lighting Design (internal and external) and Lifts
  • Working knowledge of technical software including Revit, Amtech, and Dialux
  • Experience with existing buildings and sites and assessing their suitability for redeployment with new use or under updated code requirements
  • An ability to coordinate surveys to provide a detailed understanding of projects as well as understanding the opportunities contained within existing sites
  • Experience working internationally with teams across geography and time zones
  • Knowledge of public realm, external services or related infrastructure design
  • Ability to understand the balance of engineering priorities on differing projects
  • Ability to quickly develop successful client relationships
  • Ability to work under pressure and deliver on time and within budget
  • Excellent planning and organisation skills
  • Demonstrate a strong ability to communicate through sketching, drawing, presentations, and in writing
  • A desire to work constructively in a team, finding holistic building design solutions in a multidisciplinary environment
  • Ability to develop strong commercial acumen
  • Experience of developing and assessing concept designs that meet client requirements
  • Willingness to develop site based monitoring/snagging and Contractor liaison skills.

Desirable:

  • Experience of leading electrical teams on multi-disciplinary projects
  • Experience, creativity and willingness toward investigating Value Engineering (VE) opportunities
  • Working knowledge of relevant international standards including NFPA
  • A willingness to learn and develop process automation, particularly within Revit
  • Experience of developing proposals, including fee schedules, and attending bid interviews
  • Proven ability to work with Contractors
  • An interest in coding or programming to solve engineering problems
