Director Subdivision/Unit AD

Under general administrative direction from the Assistant Vice President/Controller, the

Director of Accounting Services, is responsible for supervising, coordinating, and directing the activities of the Accounting Services Division which manages the day to day activity associated with accounting for and ensuring adequate control of the

University’s financial resources. The incumbent supervises various funds accounting activities to ensure compliance with generally accepted accounting principles as well as Federal, State, and agency regulations and oversees the timely and accurate preparation of the annual University’s financial statements and other regular reporting required by the University System of Georgia.

Qualifications

Several years of accounting experience, in higher education, governmental accounting,

and/or auditing.

Some years of supervisory experience.

Minimum Education Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field required. CPA or Master’s Degree preferred.

Responsibilities Summary

• Responsible for maintenance of the general ledger, monthly/annual closing

Procedures, financial and budgetary reporting, and account reconciliations. Directs daily accounting operations ensuring adherence to established standards of accounting principles, governmental statutes and regulations, Board of Regents rules and regulations, and institutional policies. Monitors ledger transactions to ensure data integrity. Develops queries and special reports utilizing financial and/or student information systems.

• Responsible for the application of advanced accounting experience, skills, and ability in the management of the overall operation of the Accounting Services Department including but not limited to regular and ad hoc financial reporting, reconciliation, ledger maintenance, receivables maintenance, payables maintenance, property management, travel expenses, unrelated business income taxes, sales tax, capital project accounting and a variety of complex regular and special assignments.

• Successfully lead a team of professional accounting and support staff members providing technical accounting guidance in the completion of assigned responsibilities while growing and developing their leadership competencies.

• Ensures the accuracy of financial data required for financial and management reporting for the university and consolidated other financial information including the auxiliary organizations, consistent with standard accounting practices and policies; And manages external financial audits of the university.

• Provides excellent customer service and responds to regular inquiries from the

University community. Provides guidance and training concerning accounting matters including periodic university wide training sessions.

• Consistently reviews current processes for improvement and automation opportunities to enhance financial reporting procedures.

• Directs the Accounting department, as well as assists with the leadership of other areas within the Budget and Finance Division including Accounts Payable, Grants, Travel & Expense Reimbursement.

• Responsible for the oversight of all tax related items within Budget & Finance including Sales Tax, 1042 forms, 1098 forms, etc.

• Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

• Demonstrated working knowledge of fund accounting and generally accepted accounting principles; Understanding of financial controls for educational and general

Expenses, and auxiliary enterprises; Knowledge of PeopleSoft Financials, Glacier Tax Software, PeopleSoft HRMS / ADP , and Banner Student system highly desirable.

• Strong accounting and analytical skills.

• Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.

• Ability to use independent judgment in the assigned area of responsibility with little

• Ability to effectively manage and evaluate the work of staff; Assign duties and

responsibilities; Oversee work assignments to ensure work is done accurately andtimely; And provide personnel development.

• Ability to empower and motivate employees to reach top performance.
