Celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2012, Nevada State College is the first and only four-year institution in the Nevada System of Higher Education ( NSHE ). Located on a developing 500-acre campus in the foothills of Henderson, Nevada, NSC emphasizes high-quality instruction, exemplary student support, engaging learning experiences, and innovation as a means to more efficient, effective outcomes in all corners of the campus. Enrollment at the College has climbed from 176 students in 2002 to over 3700 students in 2017.

Nevada State College invites applications for a Director of the TRIO – SSS program. The preferred candidate will lead our efforts related to our $1.2 million U.S. Department of Education Student Support Services ( SSS ) grant. In doing so, the director will make significant contributions to our institutional mission as we strive to promote the success of a diverse and highly-engaged student population. Our TRIO – SSS project is guided by successful, evidence-based practices and leverages peer support, recent technological advances, and an enhanced curriculum to facilitate the college and career pursuits of low-income, first-generation college students.

Position Summary:

The Director will bear the primary responsibility of implementing, assessing, and reporting project activities and components. These activities and components include a specialized College & Career Success Course, multiple levels of intensive peer support, a predictive analytics system, and “nudging” technology that guides students toward successful behaviors and checks on their well being through messages sent to mobile devices. The project also encourages the utilization of support resources through multiple means and consistently integrates structures and practices based on findings from the burgeoning non-cognitive literature, including recommendations from research on social belonging, academic mindset, and self-efficacy.

Primary Duties:

  • Manage all functions for the TRIO – SSS Program
  • Implement evaluations and prepare US DOE Reports
  • Coordinate TRIO – SSS services with other campus units
  • Provide counseling/advising to a portion of our TRIO students
  • Recruit students for the TRIO program
  • Develop new programs for TRIO Students
  • Maintain existing programs including financial literacy and summer bridge program
  • Teach a student success course to incoming TRIO – SSS freshman
  • Serve as TRIO Club Advisor
  • Oversee program records, accounting & reporting.

The Director will work alongside a dedicated and collegial team of faculty, staff and administrators, and will help advance critical TRIO – SSS initiatives while serving as a liaison to NSC departments and schools. Salary & Benefits

Budgeted Salary: $57,600-$60,000

Nevada State College offers excellent benefits, including 14.5% retirement match, 24 annual leave days, beginning balance of 30 sick leave days, 11 paid holidays, educational benefits, and two health insurance plans that can be supplemented with flexible spending accounts or health savings accounts. The position is grant-funded.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree (or higher) from a regionally-accredited institution in education, administration, the social sciences, or a related area.
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience in a leadership role involving staff supervision, program evaluation, and budget management of a post-secondary student support program.
  • Demonstrated commitment to and experience working with low-income, first-generation, and diverse students.
  • Knowledge of scholarly evidence for effective practices to enhance the success of first-generation, low-income, and diverse students.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including days, nights and weekends when necessary.

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with the TRIO – SSS program or a similar program that involves increasing the academic standing, retention and graduation rates of low-income and first-generation students.
  • Experience teaching student success courses.
  • Knowledge of Department of Education regulations, particularly as they relate to Student Support Services.
  • General knowledge of financial aid procedures and regulations as well as graduate/professional school entrance requirements.
  • Personal experience in overcoming cultural, academic, and economic obstacles to success.
