DEPARTMENTAL NETWORK SPECIALIST

Minimum Qualifications:

Associate’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology or related field; supplemented by two years of experience in information technology, network/technical support or related filed; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.

Specific License or Certification Required: Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia driver’s license.

Specific Knowledge, Skills, or Abilities: Must be able to demonstrate proficiency in performance of the essential functions and learn, comprehend, and apply all county or departmental policies, practices, and procedures necessary to function effectively in the position.

Examination:
The examination will consist of an evaluation of education and experience, accomplished by analysis of the application. Application must document that the applicant possesses the minimum knowledge, skills, education and experience as listed to be rated as qualified. If selected, an official, accredited college transcript is required, at time of employment, for all degrees/course work used to qualify for this position.

: Purpose of Classification:
The purpose of this classification is to provide technical assistance and support to computer users within a specific department.

Essential Functions:
The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.
Provides information system user support to specific employees within an assigned department; identifies and resolves problems to restore service to user in a timely and efficient manner; designs new or modifies existing configurations to meet users’ needs; ensures that computer and telephone equipment and operations are in compliance with applicable policies, procedures, and rules.

Troubleshoots end-user problems; responds to initial on-site requests for assistance and resolves problems; escalates problem to vendors or other personnel as appropriate; utilizes diagnostic tools and other resources as appropriate.

Administers and supports a variety of computer programs, networks, telephony systems, and peripherals as assigned: performs daily operations and administration of assigned programs, networks, telephony systems and peripherals; performs system back up and maintenance; establishes access levels and maintains system security; researches, implements and maintains network software; maintains internet connections and email systems for departments.

Installs and maintains hardware, software, telephone systems and peripherals for assigned department; assures availability and proper operation of products for installation; schedules installations; converts old system data to new system; tests installed products per department standards; completes installations and conversions in timely manner and with minimal disruption to customer; provides training as needed.

Coordinates system configurations for computer hardware, software applications and personal computers for assigned department. Supports network system access; sets up accounting for new employees and closes accounts when no longer necessary; increases account capacity when existing blocks are insufficient for work requirements; establishes port connections for new equipment to network as needed; sets up cloud access and resolves problems per established guidelines; limits user access to specific areas according to user needs.

Designs, develops, configures, maintains, repairs, and/or installs computer, network, telephone and related equipment: ensures compliance with applicable policies, procedures, and rules; conducts site survey and workflow analysis to better utilize departmental resources; works with users to plan appropriate locations for computer, network, and telephone equipment; determines facility modifications necessary to appropriately locate equipment; prepares user site plans for installations; submits requests for necessary facility modifications such as cable routing, electrical outlets, cooling, and special requirements.

Runs a variety of reports from system programs to include status reports on systems projects, as well as ad hoc reports; attends variety of staff meetings, vendor demonstrations, seminars and training classes to provide and obtain information on systems’ activities and developments.
Maintains an awareness of new applications, technologies, technical methods, trends, and advances in the profession: reviews professional publications, technical manuals, and web sites to increase knowledge of network operations; attends conferences, workshops, and training sessions as appropriate.

Processes a variety of documentation associated with department/division operations, within designated timeframes and per established procedures: receives and reviews various documentation, including server and network reports, work tickets, access approval forms, and technical support documentation; reviews, completes, processes, forwards or retains as appropriate; prepares or completes various forms, reports, correspondence, and other documentation, including server and network reports, system status reports, and work tickets; compiles data for further processing or for use in preparation of department reports; and maintains computerized and/or hardcopy records.

Operates or uses various equipment, power tools, hand tools, and supplies in order to complete work assignments: operates and maintains switches, routers, printers, servers, and other equipment; operates a personal computer to enter, retrieve, review or modify data, utilizing word processing, spreadsheet, database, presentation, Internet, e-mail, or other software; and operates general office or other equipment as necessary to complete essential functions.

Communicates with Departmental Director, Supervisors, employees, and other individuals as needed to complete work activities, as well as review and troubleshoot issues.

Situational Reasoning: Requires the ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness and creativity in situations involving the evaluation of information against sensory, judgmental, or subjective criteria, as opposed to that which is clearly measurable or verifiable.
Other Requirements:
Physical Ability: Tasks require the ability to exert very moderate physical effort in light work, typically involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling, and which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (12-20 pounds).
Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.
Environmental Factors: Essential functions are regularly performed without exposure to adverse environmental conditions
