Coordinator – Policy Coordinator

Purpose
The coordinator is responsible for conducting policy research and providing the Director, Associate Director and research staff with immediate legal input on time-sensitive policy analysis issues and serving as the primary liaison between IUPRA and multiple legislative bodies and advocacy organizations.

Essential Functions
Review institute research agenda and provide input on the legal implications of the proposed work and contribute legal perspectives and analysis to IUPRA’s work products, writing policy reports and briefs, working on projects from the initial stages and being available to research staff daily. Provide scholarly analysis of federal, state and local legislation to contribute to IUPRA policy agenda recommendations. Develop initiatives that focus on policies that impact populations of color and that generate public interest and external funding. Serve as the primary liaison between IUPRA and the legislature. Collaborate with the Governmental Relations office within the Office of the President at the University. Coordinate bi-annual Texas Legislative Black Caucus Summit and other conferences and meetings as necessary. Participate in developing policy-related courses and supervising postdoctoral fellows on policy related issues.

Required qualifications
Juris Doctor degree. Knowledge, skill, and experience in law, political science, and/or government. Experience in practicing and interpreting law or working as a legislative aide, consultant, advocate, or in a similar position. Demonstrated ability to edit complex documents and reports. Diplomacy, tact, and ability to sustain professional relationships, especially in a political context. Professional demeanor, excellent organizational and interpersonal skills. Excellent written and oral communication skills. Prior experience working in a racially and culturally diverse environment.
Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications
Experience working in a legislative or legal environment at the local, state, or federal level. Familiarity with The University of Texas at Austin policies and procedures.

A criminal history background check will be required
for finalist(s) under consideration for this position.

The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement
System of Texas ( TRS ), subject to the
position being at least 20 hours per week and at least
135 days in length.
