Coordinator of Volunteers

The Volunteer and Community Partnerships Program (VCPP) of the Human Services and Public Health Department (HSPHD) seeks a Coordinator of Volunteers to recruit and manage volunteers at various sites throughout Hennepin County. The person hired will work with county staff to develop volunteer opportunities; recruit and select appropriate volunteers; fill opportunities; orient and train the volunteers; lead, supervise, manage, and mentor the volunteers in partnership with other county staff.

The primary duties and responsibilities of this position include:

Consult with departments and manager to assess volunteer needs, and recruit and select volunteers.

Orient and train volunteers.

Assign volunteers according to division/department needs in conjunction with manager.

Lead and mentor volunteers in partnership with supervisors.

Plan, participate in and/or lead recruitment outreach activities; establish and maintain working relationships with educational institutions, civic, churches, and community groups.

Train department staff in proper use and supervision of volunteers.

Interact with staff at all levels in the organization, particularly at the assigned work site; to build relationships that develop volunteer opportunities.

Engage actively with coworkers to build strong and cohesive team.

Serve as a public information representative of the agency.

Maintain records and reports.

Best Qualified Candidates will have:
Bachelor’s degree or higher in Communications, Criminal Justice, Human Services, or another field closely related to the area of specialization and one year or more of experience as a coordinator of volunteers or in a position involving recruiting, hiring, training, supervising, and retaining volunteers. Note: Experience may be substituted for education on a year for year basis.

Experience training, facilitating, and presenting to groups.

Experience managing and implementing complex projects across multiple locations and business lines.

Access to reliable transportation to travel between the offices and community meetings, meet with staff and clients, and coordinate/oversee group events that may include providing transportation to volunteers/mentees.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills, and consulting skills.

Experience working with Microsoft Office applications (e.g. Word, Access, Excel, and, PowerPoint) as well as Microsoft Outlook.

Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
