Departmental Overview

UC Berkeley’s Department of Recreational Sports is dedicated to enhancing the knowledge, wellness, fitness, personal skills and quality of life for students, faculty, staff and the community. In addition to the competitive and recreational sports clubs, the department offers a wide range of fitness activities, classes and state of the art equipment. Outdoor trips, clinics and day programs are offered through Cal Adventures. Recreational Sports also offers events year-round for students and the campus-community. The Marketing & Communications team is tasked with providing both our members and the campus community with information about our programs and activities. We do this via several channels: websites, email, social media, video, photos, events, and more. We specialize in helping brands connect with Cal students. Our sponsorship program has produced a winning formula for both local and Fortune 500 companies to directly market their goods and services responsibly while meeting specific business objectives.

Responsibilities

This position will help Cal Recreational Sports design and deliver an integrated visual marketing and communications strategy in support of the department’s mission, programs and services across digital and social media channels. Key responsibilities include:

50% – Develop graphic designs for a variety of high quality marketing, communications and business development collateral materials, such as logos, infographics, websites, social and digital media, and print.

20% – Assist with the development and post processing of photography including staging, shooting, editing, cropping and cataloging photos.

20% – Assist with the development and post processing of videography including story development, shot list, location scouting, and shooting, editing and all other video production skills.

10% – Update graphics for departmental website including story development, image selection and content development. Working knowledge of WordPress content management system required.

Required Qualifications

Knowledge and Skills:

• Proficiency in the Adobe Creative Suite, including InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator in both Mac and PC environments.

• Proficiency in video editing software such as iMovie/iMovie HD and/or Adobe Premier; photo management software such as Adobe Raw, Bridge and Lightroom.

• Understanding of typography, color theory, editorial design and visual story telling.

• Comfort using social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and LinkedIn) to promote the Rec Sports’ programs and services.

• Working knowledge of print production processes and vendor requirements for a variety of outputs.

• Working knowledge of the campus, its achievements, mission, vision, goals, objectives, programs and infrastructure.

• Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously.

• Ability to work effectively both independently and with a team.

• Technical experience with photography equipment and understanding of photographic principles.

• Accuracy and attention to detail.

• Good written, verbal, interpersonal communication skills and political acumen.

• Ability to be forward thinking to keep abreast on the latest communications technology and practices.

• Skills to effectively produce visual materials that meet and satisfy the needs of the client.

• Good organizational skills.

• Skill to maintain confidentiality.

• Interpersonal communications skills to interact effectively with a variety of clients, department staff, campus partners and vendors.

• Ability to collaborate cross-functionally and accept feedback in order to meet the goals and objectives of clients.

• Must be able to provide online portfolio of previous design work.

Education/Training:

• Bachelor’s degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training

Other Information

This is a 100% full time, contract appointment.

Duration of contract is 2 years with possibility of extension based on department need and budget.
