Category Development Analyst

Job Title: Category Development Analyst
Reports To: Director – Customer Development
FLSA Status: Exempt

GENERAL PURPOSE:
Provide product and pricing expertise in the categories of janitorial and sanitation supplies, foodservice packaging and disposables, and/or industrial packaging supplies. Develop and maintain corporate account program pricing and cost data, and provide recommendations to Sales Team on new product offerings, enhancements to existing product bundles, and opportunities for optimizing customer spend. Build and maintain excellent Sales Team, Manufacturer/Supplier, Member Distributor and Customer relationships in support of corporate account programs.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

NEW ACCOUNTS

  • Analyze the pricing proposal data as provided by Sales and Proposal Teams, and incorporate with additional distributor site survey product data in order to finalize price list and supporting manufacturer cost contracts.
  • Finalize, publish in system and issue price list and cost support communication for new program launch with distributors and customer.
  • Leverage Category Development Leader for assistance with complex programs, and review with Category Development Leader as a QA (Quality Assurance) resource for all program launches.
  • Coordinate and record in Account Profile the program parameters around products and pricing strategy for launch communication.
  • Develop email distribution list per account based on approved distributors with signed agreements.
  • Provide subject matter expertise on manufacturers, products, pricing, distributor product capabilities in new account implementation meetings and/or conference calls. Assist in program launch to Customer and Member Distributors, as needed.

EXISTING ACCOUNTS

  • Work closely with Sales Team to understand customer product needs through participation in conference calls, onsite meetings and/or customer site visits.
  • Develop a thorough understanding of corporate account product and pricing needs, e.g. key manufacturers, key product categories, pricing structure, business cycles, etc.
  • Leverage expertise in products and pricing to provide maximum value to customers and distributors. Research and provide recommendations to Sales Team on new product offerings, enhancements to existing product bundles, and opportunities for optimizing customer spend, where possible (examples: environmental awareness, time/cost saving products, product efficiencies).
  • Collaborate with Sales Team to establish margin guidelines and communicate program to servicing distributors.
  • Work with Sales Team to introduce new product opportunities to customers, where possible.
  • Leverage Category Development Leader for assistance with complex programs, and review with Category Development Leader as a QA (Quality Assurance) resource.
  • Analyze sales reports to ensure validity of price increases and to establish consistent Manufacturer/Supplier costs and customer pricing for similarly situated customers.
  • Analyze customer product mix and make cost comparisons in order to negotiate more favorable Manufacturer/Supplier costs and contract terms for cost savings to customers. Develop Manufacturer/Supplier programs for ‘generic cost structures’ for corporate accounts. Update price lists, cost supports, and account profiles, as needed.
  • Communicate agency agreements to potential new servicing Member Distributors for new customer locations to be assigned. Track and follow-up on responses in order to timely issue program information for sales activity to start.
  • Proactively identify and resolve issues around updating corporate account prices in collaboration with staff in Operations, Sales and at Member Distributors.
  • Coordinate with other departments for communications to Member Distributors regarding any changes to corporate account programs.
  • Coordinate with corporate account customers to identify any requirements for specified proprietary product inventory and associated par levels, obtain written customer purchase guarantee for such inventory, communicate proprietary inventory par levels to Member Distributors for inventory management, and advise details of specified proprietary products to Inventory Analyst for ongoing oversight and tracking with Member Distributors.

PROPOSAL DEVELOPMENT ASSISTANCE:

  • As needed, assist Sales Proposal Team and Category Development Leader to evaluate requests for proposal (“RFP”) components, e.g. product mix, manufacturers, margins, and overall account requirements, and prepare a proposal response. Includes both prospects and existing customers:
    • Negotiate with Manufacturer/Suppliers for costs, pricing guarantees, etc.
    • Propose margin structure based on data from Sales Team, distributors, etc.
    • Calculate proposed sell prices.
    • Develop initial distributor assignments.
    • Submit findings to Category Development Leader for QAR (Quality Assurance Review) and inclusion in overall proposal.


OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Update price lists, cost supports, and account profiles, as needed
  • Provide Manufacturer/Suppliers with data on customer locations and/or Member Distributors participating in a program, as needed.
  • Recommend ways/methods to improve efficiency and productivity within the department.
  • Assist staff at Member Distributors and Customers around corporate account programs, product evaluations, order guide development, pricing methodologies, location assignments relative to Member Distributor core competencies, etc.
  • Promote a collaborative atmosphere within NETWORK and the Customer Development team. Assist and share knowledge with others to enhance department growth.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of supply chain management and the manufacturers/suppliers of core product categories: janitorial and sanitation supplies, foodservice packaging and disposables, and/or industrial packaging supplies
  • Demonstrated skill in coordinating customer product bundle development, with the ability to prioritize and deliver on multiple concurrent initiatives
  • Self-starter and creative problem solver with ability to work both independently and within a team.
  • Strong data management skills handling large volumes of data
  • Excellent understanding of and ability to perform mark-up / margin calculations, various analytical formulas and math functions
  • Results driven, with a desire to work in a fast paced environment
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and group situations
  • Excellent technical ability in mathematical calculations and internet research

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

  • Work History Requirements:
    • Minimum 5-7 years purchasing experience and/or purchasing analytical work with large volume data and price file management processes.
    • Distribution environment preferred.
  • Education Requirements:
    • Bachelor’s degree with concentration in business or finance preferred.
    • If no Bachelor’s degree, then 8+ years of equivalent and directly relevant work experience.

TECHNOLOGY AND SOFTWARE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Intermediate to Advanced level of Microsoft Excel, Word and Outlook.
  • End-user experience in using ERP systems. Familiarity with SAP a plus.

TRAINING REQUIREMENTS:

  • As needed depending on background, Category Development functions and role’s purpose within the organization.
  • Manufacturer/Supplier training sessions to maintain product and industry knowledge – occasionally off-site.
  • Communication training course
  • General Workplace Safety.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Extended hours periodically required due to business needs
  • Usual office working conditions.
