Capital Asset Accountant

About the Unit

Capital Asset Accounting is a function of Financial Services, which provides critical tracking and analysis of the University’s land, building and equipment transactions. Faculty, staff and the various contracting parties of the University are considered customers of Capital Asset and Plant Accounting. Under that concept, Capital Asset Accounting seeks to provide the highest level of customer service.

Unit Job Summary

Under direct supervision, performs a variety of routine operating or cost accounting activities which require basic knowledge of accounting theories and principles, such as: examining accounting records for the purpose of determining gains and losses, receipt and disbursements, and inventory; and preparing income and balance sheet statements, consolidated statements, and various other accounting statements and reports.

Education

Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance required.

Experience

Two years relevant property, plant and equipment experience, preferred.

Competencies

– Accounts for additions, retirements, cost transfers, transfers and disposals for capital asset inventory. Responsible for monitoring compliance with University policy.

– Maintain Property Management System processing and reporting.

– Reconcile the Property Management System to the Financial Accounting System monthly.

– Responsible for overseeing the annual close of Property Management System.

– Assist with the preparation of year-end workpapers.

– Oversight of the monthly asset tag process and annual equipment inventory process, including distribution of reports and tags, updating results of tagging and reporting status updates to management regarding progress of untagged assets.

– Provide training to users on capital equipment and annual inventory policies and procedures.

– Assist campus Equipment Coordinators with inquiries or requests for information.

– Perform periodic inspections/audits of capital equipment on campus.

– Maintain the Capital Asset Accounting website to ensure material and forms are current.

– Assist Capital Asset Accounting Manager in account creation and deletion as well as budget revisions for capital asset project accounts.

– Miscellaneous duties as assigned.
