Budget Analyst I, Center for Biomolecular Structure and Dynamics (CBSD)

The Center for Biomolecular Structure and Dynamics (CBSD) invites applications for the Budget Analyst I to provide financial services. The Budget Analyst I position is responsible for pre-award budget development and grant proposal assistance by consulting with grant applicants and developing multi-year restricted fund budgets for pre-award proposal process; assisting with budget justification and the proposal submission; and tracking status of grant submissions.

This position is responsible for financial workbook development, cost projections and budget tracking within excel. S/he updates financial reports on a monthly basis to track spending, identify savings, and determine funds availability.

This position is responsible for reconciling and reviewing expenditures of varying funds (grant, designated and private) for accuracy and compliance with fund regulations. S/he will work closely with varying project managers from several academic units and their respective administrative staff to provide expense justification or resolution through expense transfer.

This position is responsible for preparing letter of appointment contracts, graduate contracts and faculty/staff pay instruction; acquiring effort certification on Time and Effort Reports; coordinating effort reporting with multiple academic units for joint-paid employees; and acting as backup for Accounting Associate position.

This position requires incumbent to develop working relationships and act as a liaison for and positively represent the CBSD through effective interaction with the public, campus administrators, faculty, staff and students. This is achieved by cooperating with other University units that are allocated funds though the CBSD NIH CoBRE award or other sources of CBSD funding and effectively coordinating with other UM entities with which the CBSD may have financial relationships.

Required Skills

Ability to monitor grant activity and reconcile accounts

Excellent and accurate data entry skills; strong attention to detail

Knowledge of standard office practices and procedures: business English, spelling, grammar, punctuation and composition

Strong interpersonal, oral and written communication skills, including ability to work with diverse group of individuals and to establish and maintain good working relationships.

Demonstrated skills in the operation of personal computers and related word processing, spreadsheet, and database software (MS Word, Excel, and Outlook) with the ability to learn other software

Ability to work efficiently and independently to achieve goals

Strong planning and time management skills; ability to meet deadlines

Adaptability, capacity to meet challenges and learn new skills

A positive and constructive attitude, ability to interact patiently and respectively with co-workers

Ability to establish effective working relationships with students, staff, faculty and administration

Ability to use standard office equipment including copiers, fax machine, multi-line phone system

Minimum Required Experience

High School diploma and two (2) years related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Associates degree in related field.

Demonstrated knowledge of budget management practices and procedures.

Experience in pre- and/or post- award financial grant management in an academic setting

Prior experience working at the University of Montana in a financial capability. Existing relations with Human Resources, Business Services and/or Office of Research and Sponsored Programs

Experience working with research faculty in the sciences; familiarity with the basic science research culture and the working relationships among faculty, research personnel and graduate students.

Work Schedule: Full-time, 1.0 FTE (40 Hours a week), Monday through Friday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, 12 months/year

Salary: $16.534/hr – Current employee’s rate of pay for this position will be determined by the staff compensation plan, and may be different from the posted salary. For questions and details regarding the staff compensation plan, email the Compensation Department .

Probationary Period: Six months minimum
