ASSISTANT ELECTRICAL ENGINEER

The New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) protects public health and the environment by supplying clean drinking water, collecting and treating wastewater, and reducing air, noise, and hazardous materials pollution. DEP is the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the country, with nearly 6,000 employees. We deliver 1.1billion gallons of high quality drinking water per day to 8.5 million New York City residents and more than 1million people in Upstate New York, and we collect and treat an average of 1.3 billion gallons of wastewater per day.

The Bureau of Wastewater Treatment (BWT) is responsible for the operation and maintenance of all facilities related to the treatment of sewage, including wastewater treatment plants, collections facilities (pumping stations, combined sewer overflow retention facilities, regulators, tide gates), wastewater laboratories, harbor vessels and sludge dewatering facilities.

Under direct supervision of the Area Engineer in the Electrical Engineering Section, the selected candidate will perform electrical engineering work of moderate difficulty and responsibility and may supervise subordinate employees. Duties will include, but not be limited to: preparing drawings, specifications and estimates for Capital, JOC and expense projects of moderate size and complexity; issuing Job Orders on time, in accordance with established guidelines, on current projects and any new Job Order assignments; submitting reports and recommendations of project inspections and investigations; reviewing plans, shop drawings and change order requests; and maintaining status records of all projects.

Minimum Qual Requirements

1. A baccalaureate degree in electrical engineering from an accredited college or university and one year of full-time satisfactory experience in electrical engineering work; or

2. A baccalaureate degree in electrical engineering from an accredited college and a master’s degree in electrical engineering from an accredited college or university.

A master’s degree in electrical engineering from an accredited college or university can only be used to substitute for one year of full-time satisfactory work experience in electrical engineering. A degree in any other engineering area, or in any engineering technology area, is not acceptable.

Preferred Skills

– Electrical engineering principles and their application

– Experience in the wastewater industry

– Familiarity with AutoCAD, MS Project, MS Words, MS Excel, and E-Gordian software

– Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing to technical and non-technical staff

– Strong technical writing and communication skills

– A valid NYS Driver’s License which must be maintained for the duration of employment
