Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • BA/BS degree in related field. Two years of work experience in the areas of application/web/systems development with a related BA/BS degree. Four years of work experience in the areas of application/web/systems development with a non-related BA/BS degree
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience using web-based tools, technologies, practices, and web authoring software
  • Experience and knowledge of common web-based practices, tools, and technologies including use of frameworks, CMS, information architecture, usability, and accessibility

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience creating and maintaining web applications using an MVC design pattern
  • Experience in PHP, SQL, Javascript, HTML, CSS
  • Experience contributing to a code base managed by Git
  • Experience with Tableau Analytics software
  • Working knowledge of the Unix command line
  • Demonstrated ability and enthusiasm to learn new technical skills and web programming languages
  • Demonstrated ability to work and collaborate with others
  • Experience collaborating with project managers, business analysts, web editors, designers, and communications staff

About the Job

The Learning Abroad Center is one of the largest and most recognized study abroad offices in the country sending thousands of students abroad to hundreds of countries annually. As a part of the University of Minnesota the Learning Abroad Center receives university technology support and resources, but also has additional needs given the international profile of the office’s scope and work. The Application Developer role works closely with operations management staff within the LAC to develop and maintain custom web applications that extend and enhance the functionality of systems provided by the University.

Position Details

Working Title: Application Developer

Developer 2 position (9790D2)

Monday-Friday 8:00am – 4:30pm

Salary – $60,000, excellent benefits

Position Duties:
Web application development (80%)

  • Develop and support web applications that meet University of Minnesota standards for data security
  • Author Tableau Workbooks and Views, and co-manage the LAC Reporting Center
  • Perform usability evaluations; maintain and enhance previously built solutions, share clear documentation
  • Work with other University IT teams to create and maintain the infrastructure necessary to run and manage a suite of web applications
  • Troubleshoot and address browser, coding, and other technical problems for custom web applications
  • Stay current with trends and tools for web development and design
  • Regularly assesses processes and make recommendations for improvement to projects, processes, and applications

Project collaboration (10%)

  • Participate in meetings with end user staff and project team members as needed to provide input and expertise on web application strategy and execution
  • Manage web application coding process including; coding and associated documentation, developing concepts, seeking input from project managers, stakeholders, and end users
  • Participate in user training and presentations
  • Deliver projects on time

Technical infrastructure management and maintenance (5%)

  • Provide very occasional general technical assistance and support to LAC staff
  • Maintain relationships with key University contacts such as GPS-IT colleagues, web design/development staff

Other related duties as assigned (5%)
