Analytics Database Developer

The Analytics Database Developer position is a technical, hands-on role. The position is responsible for building JTV’s Business Analytics Data environment, including development, deployment and monitoring of Business Analytics’ database environment. This position will work closely with the Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW) team. The ideal candidate will have experience in developing schema objects, designing complex data structures from unstructured data, and administering the entire Oracle environment.

The Database Developer will be primarily be responsible for building necessary data aggregates for the Business Analytics team. The Database Developer will develop deep knowledge of JTV’s transactional datasets and be able to interpret and prepare datasets for the Business Analytics team. The candidate will also contribute to knowledge base of the software engineers who develop and design the enterprise data warehouse, applications, and reporting. They will also work on tuning the database for performance, availability and migrating the databases as part of consolidation. Responsibilities:

  • Configuring the enterprise databases to support Business Analytics. This includes gathering the requirements of the database needs and sizing the configuration appropriately for a new or existing database;
  • Providing technical leadership for the Business Analytics data environment including architecture, best practices, processes, automation, security, development standards and enforcing those standards;
  • Understanding and translating customer and user requirements and goals into scalable and actionable database solutions;
  • Architecting Analytics’ datasets from end to end, including creating a project source/projects, importing tables, creating logical tables, facts, metrics, attributes, transformations, partitions etc;
  • Troubleshooting and tuning to pinpoint and fix data and performance issues;
  • Support the enterprise development objectives. This includes deployment of the database artifacts and researching the impact and enabling any database feature that would be required for the enterprise applications.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college preferred, or the equivalent of 7 to 10 years of experience and/or training in the technical Business Intelligence field, or equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • Minimum of 4-5 years of hands on experience in an Oracle SQL environment, including database architecture as well as schema creation;
  • Minimum of 4-5 years’ experience in data modeling and reporting of operational or aggregate datasets from an Oracle OLTP database;
  • Advanced SQL – ability to build and debug/maintain advanced SQL queries;
  • Solid experience and ability to learn and use data loading and migration tools;
  • Should be able to write efficient SQL/PLSQL programs and use the advanced bulk processing features provided in the database;
  • Highly developed skills for troubleshooting and solving performance problems while working through large datasets. You need to know how to trace database performance issues, identify common and uncommon performance bottlenecks, and tune SQL and PLSQL as needed.
  • Experience with Oracle 12c or 11g preferred;
  • Knowledge and understanding of large unstructured datasets;
  • Solid understanding of relational structures, dimensional data modeling, DataWarehouse and BI techniques;
  • Understanding of promotion between different instances and projects used by multiple teams;
  • Proficient in analyzing business/data requirements, writing metadata definitions, and writing data mapping specifications;• Excellent communication skills, motivated to learn, and proven track record of obtaining new skills quickly;
  • Strong analytical and problem solving abilities;
  • Excellence in oral/written communications, interpersonal relations, team cooperation and demonstrated ability to communicate with both technical and business stakeholders;
  • Experience with full lifecycle development projects and agile methodologies a plus;
  • Familiarity with Oracle database features such as materialized views, bitmap indexes, IOTs, external tables, etc. especially as ETL pertains to them;
  • Familiarity with emerging technologies and software development best practices, particularly related to Enterprise Data Warehousing.
