JOB DESCRIPTION/DUTIES

The role of the airport communications operator will be to operate the airport telephone system, public address system, and TTY/TDD system. Provides routine airport information to customers and airport tenants; uses computer aided dispatch (C.A.D.) system to perform communications, field personnel management, and record-keeping duties; utilizes handheld radio and dispatch console to dispatch personnel to calls for service; monitors incidents in airport buildings and grounds via CCTV cameras. Monitors the access control system to ensure that no unauthorized access is made to Aircraft Operating Areas (AOA), sterile, and other security areas; relays information to appropriate personnel regarding public safety incidents, repair services and airport emergencies. Provides training to new operators; maintains accurate records for work to be done, work in progress and work completed; communicates tactfully and effectively with the public, airport tenants, contractors, supervisors and other employees; performs other job duties as assigned by supervisor. Must be able to work all shifts. Performs other duties or be “on call” during emergency situations as required. “Must be able to pass a criminal background check, obtain and federally mandated security clearances where required”.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Performing these duties will involve sitting for extended periods; extensive use of computerized video display equipment, phones and radios; ability to deal with a diversified group of people; understanding spoken and written information; speaking and writing effectively; walking and driving city vehicles; adjusting to interruptions and changes; attending to details amid distractions; working with a minimum of supervision; dealing with people in tense situations; recognizing sound, tone and pitch; working as a member of the team; and lifting up to twenty (20) pounds; Must be willing and available to work all shifts, including rotation, weekends and holidays.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

MINIMUM EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Requires a high school diploma or a GED.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

One (1) year of experience in a major airport terminal handling a variety of communication activities or in a related major facility handling a variety of communications equipment is required.

MINIMUM LICENSE REQUIREMENTS

Valid Class C Texas driver’s license and compliance with city’s policy on driving (AP 2-2).

PREFERENCES:

One (1) year of solid experience with Microsoft Outlook and types a minimum of 40 wpm preferred. Preference will be given to candidates that have the ability to monitor multiple phone lines, monitor screens, and has security monitors. At least one (1) year of CCTV, and access control a plus a certification in emergency management and/or communications & response, 911 dispatch certificates a plus; Microsoft Office a plus; Preference will be given to candidates that are willing to work 2nd and/or 3rd shift. Microsoft outlook experience preferred.
