MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

Under general direction of the Accounting Manager, the incumbent will perform and provide professional level, cross-functional accounting support for the University and Auxiliary Organizations which is analytical, evaluative, innovative and advisory in nature for the Accounting Department unit of Fiscal Affairs. This includes providing a wide variety of centralized accounting services where the application of knowledge about the theories, principles and practices of the accounting profession, including Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) are used in classifying, examining, analyzing, reconciling, and reporting of financial transactions while ensuring compliance of applicable laws, rules and regulations between entities, programs and funds. These responsibilities include but not limited to:

Monthly close Duties:

• Run monthly processes

• Prepare recurring and adjusting journal entries

• Process expenditure transfers

• Prepare general ledger account reconciliations

• Prepare and update lead sheets and other supporting schedules

• Review automated allocation entries for accuracy, completeness and appropriateness

• Enter assets in PeopleSoft Asset Management module and reconcile

• Run reports, public queries and review for abnormal balances, accuracy, completeness and appropriateness and report results

• Review funds and accounts for abnormal balances, accuracy, completeness and appropriateness

Year-end legal close duties:

• Prepare assigned annual legal entries

GAAP reporting duties:

• Prepare assigned PBC schedules

• Prepare assigned fluctuation analysis

• Prepare assigned GAAP entries

• Prepare sample selections

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

• The person holding this position is considered a ‘mandated reporter’ under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.

• A background check (including a criminal records check and fingerprinting) must be satisfactorily completed before any candidate can be offered a position with the CSU. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the application status of applicants or continued employment of current CSU employees who apply for the position.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience and Education:

Equivalent to a bachelor’s degree with a major in accounting, business administration, finance or a closely related field OR a combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge and abilities.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge:

General knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP); office methods and procedures; statistical and mathematical presentation of data; advanced proficiency with current word processing and spreadsheet software programs, web browsers, query tools, integrated financial systems and/or other types of records management systems.

Abilities:

Ability to interpret and follow instructions and policy guidelines; analyze financial and statistical data and draw conclusions; utilize problem solving techniques; establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; and communicate effectively with others inside and outside the unit, including conveying technical information to non- Accountants.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

• CSU or higher education or Governmental or Public accounting experience is desirable.

• Experience using PeopleSoft in a university or governmental environment is desirable

• Demonstrated knowledge and experience providing accounting and fiscal management leadership in a complex, decentralized organization.

• Demonstrated knowledge with nonprofit fund accounting and institutionally related foundations.

• Knowledge of or ability to quickly acquire knowledge of University, CSU, state and federal rules and regulations related to accounting services functional areas.
