Assistant Controller

Position Title: Assistant Controller

FLSA Status: Exempt

Report Structure: Reports to the Corporate Controller. The direct reports to this position are the Accountant, the Accountant/Payroll Specialist, and the AP Specialist.

GENERAL SUMMARY/ESSENTIAL PURPOSE:

This position is primarily responsible for the timely and accurate reporting of all corporate-level financials for RQC and all of its subsidiaries and divisions in support of RQ’s mission, vision, and values. This is achieved through leading and organizing the assigned direct reports in the preparation and maintenance of internal financial records and analysis.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Reports to the Controller
  • Manages Direct Reports and performs annual reviews for Sr. Accountant, AP Specialist, and Payroll
  • Acts as backup liaison for Sr. Accountant, AP specialist, and Payroll
  • Reviews the accuracy of all AP coded invoices and for reviewing and approving invoices to be paid by AP on a weekly basis
  • Ensures accuracy of AP checks prior to Controller’s signature
  • Reviews Project Admins checks for proper supporting documentation before submitting to the Controller for signature (shared with Senior Accountant)
  • Calculates & posts JV equity
  • Processes all general liability insurance allocation for RQC LLC and JVs
  • Reviews income statement accounts for accuracy at month end prior to preparing the financial statements
  • Reconciles and/or reviews balance sheet accounts to ensure accuracy of the accounts prior to preparing the financial statements
  • Posts Depreciation, maintains depreciation rollforward schedule, and reconciles to ensure accuracy of the assets, accumulated depreciation, and depreciation expense accounts
  • Maintains Notes Payable Rollforward and reconciles to ensure accuracy of Notes and Interest
  • Posts all contingencies for all companies
  • Researches and adjusts jobs on WIP over 100%
  • Reviews all company’s WIP Reports for accuracy, sends to Controller for approval
  • Prepares JV Equity Statements
  • Prepares, assembles, and saves RQC LLC and JV financials, sends to CFO
  • Creates amortization schedules for new capital leases
  • Responsible for current/non-current assets and debt JEs on a quarterly basis
  • Assists the Controller in providing quarterly financial information to the parent company including the Trial Balances, FA rollforward, JV detail report, WIP report, notes payable and interest, and statements of equity
  • Communicates outstanding late owner billings on a regular basis with the Project Managers to ensure the timely collection of cash for cash flow purposes
  • Assists in completing insurance renewal applications yearly
  • Assigns phase codes when a job is awarded, if applicable
  • Sets up new JV bank accounts when jobs are awarded to a new JV
  • Responsible for obtaining financial questionnaires and bondability letters from bonding company and bankers
  • Oversees the processing and payment of Sales and Use tax
  • Oversees and approves audit items provided by Sr. Accountant for JV partners, WC, Sales Tax and other requests from outside stakeholders
  • Responsible for coordinating and gathering year-end audit information (not including the financials and corresponding notes). Ensures requested items are provided to the CPAs and are in compliance with GAAP
  • Responsible for coordinating, creating reports, and gathering tax information requested from parent company
  • Maintains Vital Factor worksheet and attends the Vital Factor meetings quarterly
  • Maintains current procedure manual. Ensures all positions have updated procedure manuals
  • Performs other duties as assigned and agreed upon with supervisor.M

This duty is still required to be performed in this role, however.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

  • A four-year degree in accounting, or finance field is the minimum formal education required for this position. A combination of equivalent work experience and training in the field may be qualifying.
  • Five or more years corporate accounting work experience (or equivalent) required, General Ledger (G/L) reconciliation and preparation of financial statements, measurement, data analysis, and interpretation.
  • Two or more years accounting experience at a corporate management level required.
  • Computer literacy (Microsoft Office and Internet) required.
  • Specific software literacy (Viewpoint) preferred.
  • Construction Accounting experience preferred.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Working conditions are normal for an office environment. Excellent individual performance is expected. Company goals will be realized through dedicated teamwork pursuing Company objectives. Work is completed in the corporate office.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

May be required to lift up to 30 lbs. Requires basic office work, including sitting, walking, climbing stairs, bending, and operating office equipment that is hand operated.
