The Metropolitan Council of the Twin Cities is seeking to hire a full time Accountant in the Regional Administration Division. This position is located in our main office at 390 Robert Street North, St. Paul MN 55101.

Hiring range (depends on qualifications): $58,261.00 annual to $61,277.00 annual

Full salary range: $58,261.00 annual to $82,638.00 annual

The Accountant is responsible for general ledger accounting functions for basic governmental funds (may include the General Fund, Capital Projects Funds, and/or Special Revenue Funds). This position works with Financial Analysts and Division program staff by performing calculations, preparation, analysis and reconciliation duties. She or he is also responsible for general ledger accounting functions for basic governmental funds (may include the General Fund, Capital Projects Funds, and/or Special Revenue Funds).

This position works with Financial Analysts and Division program staff by performing calculations, preparation, analysis and reconciliation duties. Duties include reconciliation of account balances, preparation of state and federal grant reimbursement billings, creation and review of journal entries, report generation (monthly, quarterly, adhoc) and preparation of financial statements the Council’s Comprehensive Annual Financial Report.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Monitor general ledger accounts for assigned funds and accounts to assure transactions are accurately recorded in the financial system

Prepare journal entries to record monthly accruals, correct posting errors, etc

Reconcile account balances, prepare supporting documentation, and billing for state or federal reimbursement requests

Review grant project/budget reports with financial analyst and/or program managers

Perform reconciliations and/or allocations of account balances to assure appropriate recording and financial system integrity (may include such accounts as payroll, cash, investments, inter-fund activity, or other balances as assigned)

Prepare financial statements in accordance with GAAP for assigned funds

Run and develop queries and reports from the financial system

Respond to inquiries from internal and external auditors for assigned funds and activities

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or closely related field.

OR

Associate degree in Accounting or a closely related field AND two (2) years of experience in an accounting environment.

Desired Qualifications in Addition to One of the Above

Governmental accounting experience

Experience with PeopleSoft financials system

Direct experience with Capital Assets

Direct experience with financial reporting and journal entries

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)

Problem solving skills

Ability to reconcile account balances using reports, queries, spreadsheets, etc.

Experience with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Excel)

Ability to interpret policies, procedures, and reporting requirements and apply to job responsibilities

Ability to prioritize work to meet deadlines

Ability to read, analyze and interpret professional documents

Ability to calculate balances and resolve variances

Work Environment
