Accountand Level I

Performs professional accounting work of moderate difficulty and responsibility; Executes accounting assignments following prescribed rules of procedure. Prepares reconciliations and balances books. Prepares reports and correspondence affecting various accounts. Conducts an audit program; examines books and personnel and timekeeping records; analyzes data; prepares work papers and reports on findings setting forth criteria, conclusions and recommendations.

Performs audit follow-up tasks, e.g., reviews reports and requests for status update; maintains file on each audit; coordinates implementation of audit recommendation; monitors computerized tracking system; determines what additional follow-up is needed.

Develops work papers, obtains documents (i.e., vouchers, warrants, contracts, budgets, time cards) from agency and analyzes them. Uses computer to input and retrieve information. Performs difficult arithmetical computations.

Maintains control of nominal and real accounts. Respond both orally and in writing to inquiries from clients, vendors and agency personnel.

Minimum Qual Requirements

1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university, accredited by regional, national, professional or specialized agencies recognized as accrediting bodies by the U.S. Secretary of Education and by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA), including or supplemented by 24 semester credits in accounting, including one course each in advanced accounting and auditing; or

2. A valid New York State Certified Public Accountant license.

To be eligible for placement in Assignment Level II individuals must have, in addition to meeting the minimum requirements, at least one year of experience as an Accountant – Assignment Level I or at least two years of satisfactory full-time professional accounting or auditing experience.

Preferred Skills

• Excellent verbal and written communications skills

• Preferred candidates with excellent analytic skills, as well as Advanced Access and Excel expertise.

• Knowledge of GAAP, GAGAP, GAAS, FMS system, and Microsoft Office.

• Experience in waste management and contract accounting.

• Strong organizational, interpersonal and writing skills.

Residency Requirement

New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County.
