Summary of Work

Responsible for performing wildlife development, operations and maintenance activities on District VI Wildlife Management Areas in the western part of the state which includes Divide, Burke, Williams, Mountrail, McKenzie, Dunn, Golden Valley, Billings, Stark, Slope, and Bowman counties. Duties involve biological, mechanical, and chemical control of noxious weeds; fence construction and repairs; prescribed fire management; operation and maintenance of heavy equipment to establish food plots, grass plantings and road maintenance; operation of welders and shop power tools; assisting with wildlife surveys and trapping operations; involvement in the Department’s wildlife depredation program; and other duties as assigned. Employee will be required to work independently out-of-doors often in extreme weather conditions. Employee will be required to work at other locations in the state as required. Coordinate seasonal employee work schedules and activities.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must have at least a two-year Associates Degree in biology or closely related field. A working knowledge of and experience in wildlife resource and land management is required.

  • Applicants must have knowledge or experience in applying principles of wildlife biology and habitat relationships.
  • Applicant must possess or be able to obtain a valid class A North Dakota driver’s license and a ND Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
  • Must have basic work experience in the use of shop machinery and tools.
  • Must have basic work experience in heavy equipment operation, basic carpentry, and equipment maintenance.
  • Must be able to operate UTV’s and 4×4 ATV’s
  • Must attend and successfully complete the first fire control and management training course available after the hiring date.
  • Must become certified and licensed for application of restricted use pesticides after the hiring date.
  • Must be able to load and move objects weighing up to 50 lbs.

Preferred Qualifications

Preference will be given for:

  • Knowledge and experience using computerized databases.
  • Knowledge and experience using arc, wire-feed and acetylene welders.
  • Knowledge and experience in the Department’s wildlife depredation program.
  • Knowledge and experience in the biological, mechanical and chemical control of noxious and invasive weeds and work experience in the operation and maintenance of pesticide sprayers.
  • Work experience using fire pumpers.
  • Experience using and maintenance of farm tractors, grain and corn drills, trailers and flatbed trucks.
