On completion of University your professional training will prepare you for a role where you are responsible for a team of highly skilled technicians. You’ll provide the guidance needed to guarantee the operational capability of vital equipment, from sensitive electronics and combat systems to gas-turbine engines, in some of the most demanding workplaces around on the planet.

Your role

Complete up to four A levels including Mathematics and Physics. Further subjects available include Chemistry, Biology, Electronics, Computing, Geography, Government and Politics, Business Studies, Design and Technology, and Further Mathematics.

Engage in Physical Education (PE), European Computer Driving Licence (EDCL) and Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHCE) lessons.

Develop an understanding of your future career in Career Life Service Skills (CLASS), enriched by regular engagement from serving officers and specialists.

All students are part of the Combined Cadet Force (CCF) at Welbeck, where the main emphasis of the training programme is the development of your leadership potential.

All students are expected to study four AS levels which must include Mathematics and Physics. In the Upper Sixth you’ll be required to study Mathematics and at least two other A levels

On graduating from Welbeck students will apply to read an approved degree from one of our 11 partner universities and be enrolled onto the Defence Technical Undergraduate Scheme (DTUS). Find out more here

Joining process

Once you’ve confirmed your eligibility, the joining process is as follows:

Book a place on an Open Day to visit the College and meet our staff and students.

You can register your interest by completing the application form online or by calling 0345 602 0242. We will send you a link to start your online application.

Download a Welbeck Proforma and get it completed by your current School/College and take it with you to your first Royal Navy interview.

You will be sent an invitation to attend an interview at your local Armed Forces Careers Office (AFCO) where you will complete the Royal Navy Recruit Test and have your initial interview.

If successful you will be invited to attend the Admiralty Interview Board (AIB) selection centre.

Successful applicants are offered a provisional place pending GCSE results.

Initial training

Professional training

Almost all Welbeck students are pre-selected by the services to join the Defence Technical Officer and Engineer Entry Scheme (DTOEES). Here you’ll have the opportunity to move onto one of 11 partner universities through The Defence Technical Undergraduate Scheme (DTUS) to study engineering and technical degrees with the added bonus of an annual bursary of £4000.

During your time at university you’ll join a military support unit (squadron). The squadrons are staffed by members of the armed forces, who will mentor and assist your progression through university. You are expected to attend one training evening a week for which you’ll receive training pay. You’ll also have the chance to complete adventurous training and work experience which will be arranged during holiday periods – and you can expect to earn upto £2000 a year in training pay for taking part.

After that, you’ll start your initial officer training with the Royal Navy at Britannia Royal Naval College, Dartmouth. During your initial officer training you may be elegible to receive the Engineer Officer joining bonus of £27,000 if you haven’t received a DTUS bursary.
