Web Developer

University Communications mission is to enhance MSU’s public image, increase the public’s awareness of MSU’s accomplishments and develop consistent communications that build our reputation. University Communications manages the marketing, promotional and licensing efforts of the university, supports and promotes MSU’s activities through expert and creative communications. We provide a wide range of services to the university community through our operational units: MontanaPBS, MSU News Service, MSU Creative Services, MSU Web and Digital Communications, University Marketing, MSU Public Relations and University Printing. Our staff includes journalists, media specialists, writers, editors, graphic designers, photographers, broadcast media specialists, publications specialists, marketing specialists, Web programmers and printers.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Identify, develop, and implement comprehensive technical solutions for new and current Web and digital communications.
  • Initiate and manage the execution of Web projects from planning through development.
  • Build, maintain, and enhance digital development standards and best practices (Web, mobile, email, digital signage).
  • Develop, plan and implement usability, accessibility and search engine optimization improvements across the university’s Web domain.
  • Perform other duties as needed in support of Web and Digital Communications team

Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Web and Graphic Design, Communications, or a related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated experience with modern web technologies and user interface design including responsive development, HTML5, CSS3, AJAX , SVG , Sass and Grunt, as well as working with the following languages: PHP , JavaScript, jQuery, MySQL and/or other related technologies.
  • Demonstrated experience in effectively troubleshooting, supporting and developing Web services.
  • Demonstrated experience in a team-based software engineering workflow, moving code from the local development environment (Vagrant or similar) to production, maintaining code with version control (Git preferred)
  • Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

  • Experience working with strategic marketing and branding as they relate to Web Communications.
  • Experience in higher education or complex multi-faceted organizations.
  • Experience in user experience (UX), accessibility, and/or search engine optimization ( SEO ).
  • Experience using Web research and/or assessment tools such as Google Analytics.
  • Experience with Linux command line operations
