Web and Marketing Assistant – 94

Summary:

  • Web Services – Develop and maintain public websites, intranet and content for social media for the Charleston Division Health Sciences Center—involved in all stages of development, from planning to design to implementation and support of webs and social media

services throughout all WVU Charleston and WVUPC departments.

  • Marketing – Assist in the Creative Direction and Implementation of all Marketing and Communications Efforts – responsible for all creative output, working with the creative team and creative processes; the ideation, presentation and execution of branding

and marketing communications campaigns; all in fulfillment of our marketing plan for the WVU Charleston Division and the West Virginia University Physicians of Charleston, in both our academic and clinical missions.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties:
Develop and maintain public websites for the Charleston Division Health Sciences Center—involved in all stages of website development, from planning to design to implementation.

1. Develop creative content for websites and marketing materials to effectively communicate the ideas, messages and goals being promoted by the Charleston Division Health Sciences Center and its schools, departments and programs. Develop multimedia and other

presentation materials to be used in conjunction with Health Science Center websites and marketing efforts.

2. Work with web development programs in WordPress and using web platform software and graphics software such as Adobe Creative Cloud and the Microsoft Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Access and Excel).

3. Maintain a web presence by establishing a consistent visual image for all web sites within a school, section, center or department, and any assigned web sites, utilizing uniform fonts, formatting, icons, images, layout techniques, and modularization, including

maintenance of HTML template and image archives.

4. Create and maintain departmental accounts for editing HSC public websites.

5. Support all web applications developed or integrated into our environment by providing technical assistance and support to faculty, staff and students from the WVU Charleston Division, The WVU Physicians of Charleston, and those organizations that are affiliated

with our campus and its programs, such as the West Virginia Geriatric Education Center, The WV Poison Center and others.

6. Analyze web site traffic, page hits, user information and current web trends and statistics, for use in analyzing the effectiveness of current or future web sites and web applications.

7. Provide faculty and staff with technical and instructional expertise in converting existing educational materials to an online format. Inform faculty about the best methods for presentation of content on the web, determining which electronic format is best

on a case-by-case basis. Instruct faculty and staff on how to use technology more effectively in the classroom, offering them strategies to present course material in exciting and appealing ways. Conduct educational workshops for faculty and staff both in

the classroom setting and individually.

8. Train users on how to access and perform functions using the WVU HSC content management system to create and maintain departmental websites. This may be in the form of one-to-one training or in small groups. Provide website technical support.

9. Maintains regular and frequent contact with sources in the hospital, clinics, departments, and centers to solicit relevant information to highlight and promote HSC achievements through distribution as news releases, opinion pieces, Web features and other

communication vehicles. This would include soliciting and reviewing faculty research reports, grant summaries, campus documents, specialized journals and newsletters and conducting person-to-person interviews to develop written copy meeting institutional marketing/communication

objectives.

10. May follow policies, processes, procedures and associated documentation in compliance with WVU and HSC development and security standards, federal and university privacy, confidentiality, and security guidelines relative to securing personal information

(generated, stored and/or transmitted electronically) maintained in supported systems.

11. Ensure that University policies regarding web design guidelines are adhered to by individual units within Health Sciences. Ensure websites comply with current standards such as the 508-Accessibility when applicable, and other web standards which may come

into effect.

12. Keep up with current trends in web technology, web standards and web browsers. Motivation to learn appropriate new technologies is essential.

13. Works to create content for marketing and social media, including photography, video content and written word.

Assist in Creative Process of all Marketing and Communications Efforts

1. Serves as contributing writer and assists with the planning, development, production and assessment of communications in all media. Develops multimedia content (including digital video, audio and still photography).

2. Develop and produce interactive applications, multimedia presentations, streaming audio, and streaming video, using Adobe Flash, Adobe Premiere Pro and other multimedia software.

3. Perform basic design and layout functions for publications. Work in close coordination with internal and external designers, photographers, production and distribution providers and others in assuring the quality and timeliness of publications.

4. Monitor legal and liability issues related to all forms of electronic communications and new media and notify supervisor of any shortcomings or deficiencies.

5. This position may work with apprentices, department liaisons and student workers.

6. Other projects as assigned.

Qualifications:
Education and Experience:
A bachelor’s degree or working on a degree in Web Design, Graphic Design, Communications, Journalism, or equivalent experience is required. Experience in web development, graphic design/illustration/advertising, website management experience, or related work

experience not required but a plus. Experience with Web and electronic publications. Must include hands-on experience in the creation and design of Web sites using HTML, ASP.NET, XML, CSS. Experience with a variety of computer systems and platforms.

Required Knowledge, Skill and Characteristics:
1. Extensive knowledge and demonstrated ability in developing and managing web sites, including hands-on experience in the creation and design of complex web pages during all stages of development: pre-planning, design, development, implementation, evaluation

and maintenance. Demonstrated knowledge of HTML, FTP, web development tools and content management systems. Knowledge of electronic communication systems, including but not limited to the WWW/Internet.

2. Must have thorough knowledge of HTML and the ability to code HTML by hand, while also being familiar with WYSIWYG environments.

3. Understands technical and functional design requirements.

4. Demonstrated experience in writing news and feature articles, with exceptional attention to detail.

5. Strong analytical skills to be able to define procedural problems, collect and evaluate data, draw valid conclusions and project consequences of various alternative recommendations. Ability to take initiative and find solutions to problems. Demonstrated

ability to reason logically and analyze and solve problems.

6. Excellent interpersonal skills with ability to interact at all organizational levels and with technical staff, managers and end-users. Demonstrated ability to work as a member of a team of diverse skill levels and expertise from multiple areas; functioning

in an optimum role for team success. Demonstrated ability to take direction from peers if directed for the purpose of a project.

7. Ability to create and produce digital media files in formats such as .wmv, .mpg, .mov, .avi, .mp3 and .mp4 for embedding/streaming within web sites and for use in CD-based presentations.

8. High degree of writing proficiency. Excellent oral and written communication skills required, with an orientation toward customer service and education. Skill in translating a school/department/program’s informational content into a functional website.

9. Solid graphic design skills are a must. Skill with Adobe Photoshop is a necessity and skill with Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Flash is preferred. Experience with Adobe InDesign, and Adobe Premiere Pro is a plus. Familiarity with image manipulation, compression,

and optimization techniques is necessary, including but not limited to an understanding of the compression methods and pros and cons of using JPEG, GIF and PNG images.

10. Excellent organizational and time management skills. Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize as needed, and to work and communicate in challenging situations.

11. Demonstrated experience delivering quality, user-accepted, completed tasks on time. Proven ability to meet deadlines and commitments.

12. Must be detail-oriented and highly motivated. Initiative and motivation to request, accept, and complete tasks as required.

17. Experience with JavaScript, CSS, and XML.

18. Must have strong technical knowledge of personal computing systems. Must be able to provide advanced support for various hardware platforms, operating systems and software packages.

19. In-depth knowledge of general office software including word-processing, database, and spreadsheet applications (prefer Microsoft Office including Word, Access, Excel and PowerPoint).

20. Familiarity with digital photography, digital video, scanning and printing, and digital media files and formats. Familiarity with portable media players and devices and social web sites a plus. Ability to stay current and informed on latest web and portable

technologies and trends.

21. Demonstrated ability to prepare technical documentation and justify approach used, resolve complex issues, explain and/or train staff on technical features of an application or process, and the ability to express technical information to non-technical users

as well as gather information from them relating to system development to meet their business rules.

22. Experience in computer consulting; assisting others in resolving computer problems; providing computer purchase advice and conducting and assisting in the analysis of research information.

23. Proven experience with development/troubleshooting/maintenance tools.

24. Experience in delivering and supporting applications with stringent security requirements to the Internet. Broad knowledge of computer security issues, requirements and trends, including an awareness of information security laws (such as HIPAA, FERPA) and

accepted industry practice.

25. Ability to rapidly learn new and complex software and functions, including web development, graphic design, email, word processing, spreadsheet, terminal emulation, file transfer, printing and operation systems.
