SBA’s Digital Service team operates like a start-up within the agency. We’re a small group of technologists and strategists—designers, product owners, engineers, and content aficionados who are working to modernize the agency’s digital presence, namely sba.gov. We’re looking for an individual who is mission-oriented, an excellent communicator, has practical experience, and is eager to learn, lead, and do. Most importantly, we’re looking for someone who is a believer in the power of innovation manifested in people, process and technology.

The Visual Designer will be part of an agile delivery team focused on delivering new customer-facing responsive web designs and web-based applications. You will play an integral role in improving the look and feel of our web presence.

What you’ll do

• Take wireframes and translate them into high-fidelity, visual UI mockups and prototypes consistent with the SBA brand, image, intent, mission, and vision.

• Deliver final design assets with annotations for developers to implement on the live website.

• Produce compelling illustrations that simplify complex business and financial concepts for millions of small business owners.

• Push our branding and illustration style to keep things fresh and interesting.

• Collaborate with a lead designer, content strategist, product managers and developers in executing the bold yet elegant design solutions

What you’ll need

• Experience; a portfolio showcasing at least 3 years of visual design experience for web and/or mobile, or at a similar capacity as a product designer.

• Storytelling skills; experience with visual storytelling including editorial illustrations, data visualization, and/or animation.

• Creative problem-solving abilities; you are a big-picture, strategic thinker that keeps the users in mind.

• Attention to detail; you aim for pixel perfection in your work.

• Good verbal and communication skills; you can articulate your design decisions and explain your designs to cross-functional teams.

• Ownership; you are proactive and can own your part of the project without much oversight.

• Fluency in design tools, particularly Sketch and Invision.

• Ability to work in our Washington D.C. office (located by the Federal Center SW Metro)

• U.S. Citizenship

Bonus points if you have

• Design agency experience.

• Knowledge of HTML/CSS and Drupal.

• Experience working in an agile environment.
