UNIX/LINUX Systems Engineer – 12109

Primarily supports AIX and Linux environment. Responsible for supporting all infrastructure hardware and software. Performs tasks such as installing Virtual Machines using both IBM and VMware software, managing resources, patching, upgrading, monitoring, security hardening, performance/tuning and demonstrate problem resolution. Evaluates current system and makes recommendations on future development, capacity planning, and disaster recovery.

Minimum Job Requirements:
Bachelor of Science in Computer Sciences/ Information Systems/related major or 5 years’ equivalent work experience in server or network analysis

4 years of administration, configuration and maintenance of servers and networks in an operations technical role

3 or more years of Unix/ Linux systems experience required

Qualifications

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:
Collaborates and coordinates with internal IT teams to support, improve experiences, and reduce manual user intervention in server infrastructure operations

Communicates effectively with MCHS clients and staff; builds a positive working relationship with the client. Trains the client on MCHS-installed technology solutions and solution components.

Delivers high-quality integration services to MCHS clients, including configuration of servers, workstations and internetworking equipment on servers and workstations.

Ensures technical excellence in service delivery to maximize up time and customer satisfaction and to minimize down time.

Ensures the security of MCHS information systems and regulatory compliance.

Leads or assists in management of assigned projects with the Project Consultant team.

Ensures system incidents and problems are properly identified and effectively resolved in compliance with policy and service-level agreements.

Prepares work product documentation, checklists, training materials and standards documents to ensure a high quality of service delivery and maximize MCHS efficiency and effectiveness.

Responds to monitoring alerts to quickly identify issues and implement resolution to avoid or reduce unplanned incident or outage.

Provides technical input on design and build specifications of proposed new server and application infrastructure to further MCHS’ mission.

Tests all work and involves the client in acceptance testing to ensure their needs are met; ensures the client’s systems are fully functional and meet the client’s business needs.

Continually monitors and tune serves infrastructure to assure optimal availability, performance and utilization of resources.

Configures software and hardware for UNIX support initiatives to meet client business needs.

Reviews and addresses assigned service tickets within the IT service management system to meet established service level agreement.

Performs proactive

preventative maintenance

of Unix/Linux servers through patch management, firmware upgrades, and capacity planning by adhering to change management process.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
Advanced knowledge of AIX/Linux (Redhat, Suse and Ubuntu) environment including, but not limited to troubleshooting, performance tuning, monitoring, account management, patch management, backups using IBM Tivoli etc.

Experience with IBM PowerVM, HMC, virtual technologies

Experience in TCP/IP, Internet Technologies, Network Technologies; particularly as they pertain to managing AIX or Linux systems and applications running on these systems

Experience with various Unix shells; kornshell, BASH, C-shell

Experience with AIX ODM and LVM

Experience with NPIV, Virtual SCSI, Virtual Ethernet and VIOS

Experience with RedHat management software (Satellite).

Experience in Redhat clusting using veritas and HAExperience with IBM HMC/NIM or Linux autoyast and kickstart build processes

Flexible schedule working in a 24 x 7 x 365 environment

Strong information gathering, proactive planning, documenting & forecasting skills

Familiarity with disaster recovery planning/methodologies a plus

Ability to adapt to and quickly learn new technologies and products
