Teacher, Upper School Learning Support

This position involves teaching study support classes to students in grades 9-12.

Specific duties include the following:

  • Creating a learning environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity, needs and interests of the student
  • Employing strategies and techniques during instruction to improve the development of cognition, memory and retention skills
  • Reinforcing learning from academic subjects using a variety of techniques such as phonetics, multi-sensory learning, and repetition to meet students’ varying needs
  • Helping students devise a plan for success in each core course
  • Managing student behavior in a manner that optimizes learning
  • Having a general knowledge of curriculum in Upper School disciplines so that he or she feels confident providing guidance to help students maximize their success in all courses
  • Maintaining regular communication with students, their other teachers, and their parents regarding progress
  • Working cooperatively with the learning support department chair and other support teachers to develop instructional materials that are most appropriate for meeting curricular objectives
  • Collaborating and consulting with learning disabilities specialist regarding the implementation of accommodations
  • Willing and able to follow school and departmental procedures and regulations

Required Skills include the following:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills demonstrating tact and diplomacy
  • Competency with basic word processing, spreadsheets, and internet
  • A solid understanding of learning challenges as well as the accommodations and differentiated learning techniques to support students’ needs
  • Strong organizational and classroom management skills

Minimum Job Qualifications:

  • Undergraduate degree in Special Education (or similar degree) from an accredited institution of higher learning; master’s degree in Special Education preferred
  • 3+ years of successful teaching high school learning support coursework preferred
  • Knowledge of current special education practices, brain-based learning techniques, and methodologies
  • Independent school experience preferred, but not required

The Teacher, Upper School Learning Support position is an exempt, salaried, ten-month position. Salary is commensurate with education and experience. Benefits are substantial.
