Systems Administrator (Linux/Networking)

The Institute for Systems Biology is seeking an experienced System Administrator. This position designs, builds, supports, and maintains corporate computing and networking environment by identifying requirements, installing equipment, performing upgrades, and monitoring system performance.

Essential functions of this position include:

  • Establishes system specifications by conferring with users; analyzing workflow, access, information, and security requirements; designing system infrastructure.
  • Establishes systems by planning and executing the installation, configuration, and testing of hardware, software, operating systems and system management tools.
  • Maintains system performance by performing system monitoring and analysis, and performance tuning; troubleshooting system hardware, software, networks, operating systems and system management tools; designing and running system load/stress testing; escalating application problems to vendor.
  • Secures systems by developing system access, monitoring, control, and evaluation; testing disaster recovery policies and procedures; completing back-ups; maintaining documentation.
  • Upgrades systems by conferring with vendors and services; developing, testing, evaluating, and installing enhancements and new software.
  • Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities.
  • Protects organization’s value by keeping information confidential.
  • Accomplishes organization goals by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests; explores opportunities to add value to job accomplishments.
  • Creates, maintains, and modifies custom scripts and computer applications.
  • Other duties as assigned

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    BA/BS degree in a relevant discipline with 5 years of appropriate system management and architecture experience, or equivalent combination of related education and experience. Ability to program in an applicable scripting language. High level of experience with administering Linux systems and corporate networking environment. Must have experience in: Cisco ASA (firewall, VPN, IPS); HP Procurve switches; Apache configuration; Tomcat configuration; MySQL administration; RedHat Enterprise Linux (maintenance and administration of); NGINX proxy (configuration and operation of); Familiarity with VMware virtualization; DNS & DHCP (configuration and maintenance of). Strong project management skills. Ability to lift and carry up to 30 lbs of equipment with or without reasonable accommodation.

    Must have good interpersonal and communications skills; capable of writing proposals or papers; able to work effectively with variety of people in a diverse workforce; adaptable to changing work requirements; willing to multi-task; high degree of professional integrity; strong client service orientation.

    All ISB staff members are expected to have baseline technical skills and the ability to communicate effectively and appropriately over email, the intranet/forum, etc. Employees should be able to use Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint (or open source equivalent) at a functional level.
