Sybase/Oracle DBA

The position suits a highly skilled DBA who has a strong interest in career advancement in both a technical stream, as well as being a team lead/manager. The candidate would be required to work on a roster together with a number of DBAs located in London, US and Asia/ANZ. They would also be required to manage and co-ordinate a team of three other DBAs in the Houston office locally.


Core responsibilities of the role include:

  • building and maintaining sound working relationships with the Macquarie business users and the wider global IT team
  • providing first-class relational database management systems support
  • being accountable for the technical delivery of database projects and database support
  • involvement in disaster recovery planning and testing when required
  • involvement in the automation and manual executions of database system builds, installations, provisioning, deployment
  • ongoing upgrade and maintenance of database versioning
  • ensuring that database systems are built to Macquarie standards and with existing fleet meeting our compliance standards
  • ensuring optimum performance and availability of Macquarie’s database systems
  • participation in scheduled weekend and after-hours work when requested

    Essential Experience and Characteristics

  • an expert level Database Administrator, with a strong primary skill-set in Oracle (inc. ASM, RMAN, OEM and Data Guard), Sybase ASE and Replication Server. Sybase IQ and ECDA skills are desirable but optional.
  • minimum 10 years of relevant DBA experience
  • 4 years working in a global corporate environment
  • ability to work independently and strong sense of ownership
  • have an automate first mindset
  • customer-focused with good verbal and written communication skills
  • ability to trouble-shoot complex database problems when escalations from the DBA Operations team occur
  • experience with perl and/or shell scripting
  • Java, Ansible or Puppet experience is desirable
  • experience with code development products/practices like stash/git/branching/agile and JIRA
  • strong RedHat Linux and/or Solaris skills
  • knowledge of ITIL practice and demonstrable experience with change management processes and procedures
  • experience with VERITAS as well as SAN/disk replication products
  • experience with Veritas Cluster technology
  • experience with Cloud deployments (either public or private) preferred

    Core Sybase/Oracle skills:

  • Knowledge of Oracle 11.2 and above.
  • Experience using and configuring Oracle Enterprise Manager 11.1 and above.
  • Experience using Automatic Storage Management (ASM) in a replicated SAN environment.
  • Knowledge of Sybase ASE 15 through to 16
  • Knowledge of Sybase Replication Server 15.2 and 15.7

    Plus skills in at least one of the following:

  • Knowledge of Oracle Data Guard
  • Knowledge of Oracle RAC
  • Knowledge of Sybase MDA tables
  • Knowledge of Sybase replication server counters/monitoring
  • Knowledge of Sybase MSA replication
  • Knowledge of ASEMon for Sybase
  • Knowledge of Sybase Replication Data Assurance
  • Knowledge of Sybase IQ or ECDA
