Statistician II

This position will be critical in achieving our vision of establishing predictive analytics as a competitive advantage of MAPFRE USA. Work has strategic impact on potentially all functional areas including marketing, product, actuary, operations, and claims. Responsible for research and development of predictive models and analytical techniques for subjects involving insurance pure premiums, customer life time value, customer buying behaviors, retention and other related topics utilizing internal and external data. The analysis and modeling will be tested via implementation both broadly and on a pilot basis to allow us to learn and refine our approaches in rapid succession.

Job Requirements

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Education: Masters Degree or equivalent, related experience.
  • Experience: 4 – 6 years – or Associates Degree equivalent plus 6 – 8 years.
  • Knowledge: Complete understanding and knowledge of industry practices, standards, and concepts within field of work. Applies them to perform or lead work requiring extensive analytical business skills.
  • Decision Making: Makes decisions using broad management limits. Applies guidelines and procedures that leave considerable room for discretion and interpretation. Decisions directly influence project, client relationships and or expenditures. Additionally, decisions exert some influence on organization’s long-range goals and objectives. Participates in determining objectives of assignments.
  • Supervision Received: Works independently under general supervision. Work is reviewed for overall adequacy in meeting objectives.
  • Leadership: May provide training and guidance to less experienced staff.
  • Problem Solving /Operations/Direct Work Involvement: Applies knowledge to determine solutions to complex problems with minimal direction. Uses research and analysis to develop innovative and practical solutions which are consistent with organizational objectives.
  • Client Contacts: Contacts other departments and or external organizations or parties frequently. Contacts are primarily at or below upper management levels. Represents organization on specific projects. Communication may involve persuasion, and negotiation.

Additional Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Basic Qualifications:

Education and Experience

– Master’s Degree or above with 0+ years of experience, Bachelor’s Degree with 4+ years of experience, or Associate’s Degree with 6+ years of experience

– Degrees in Statistics, Economics, Mathematics, Finance, Engineering, Science, or a related quantitative analytical field.

– Experience in insurance, banking, credit card or other financial industries, or comparable consulting experience.

Technical Skills

– Strong in statistical techniques including

– GLM – multiple regression, logistic regression, log-linear regression, and variable selection.

– Multivariate analysis – Clustering, factor, principal component, etc.

– Forecasting – time series, etc.

– Strong programming skills in SQL, SAS

– Experience building predictive models on very large datasets

– Experience applying advanced predictive analytics to develop solutions for areas such as marketing, underwriting, pricing, product, product development, risk management, operational optimization, retention, fraud detection, and claim management.

Competencies

– Good understanding of the business of P&C insurance and insurance data;

– Ability to meet deadlines

– Good verbal and written communication skills; must be able to explain technical results to technical and non-technical audiences

Preferred Qualifications:

– Knowledge of survival analysis, Bayesian analysis, discriminant, correspondence, multi-dimensional scaling, decision trees, GAM, neural networks, text mining and geospatial analysis

– Proficient in data modeling, merge/purge, query, and reporting in SAS, DBMS (e.g. Oracle, DB2, ACCESS), and other systems.

– VBA, EXCEL, ACCESS, SQL Server, Teradata, UNIX, LINUX, MVS, R, SAS Enterprise Miner, Congos

C, C++, JAVA, or other programming
