Staff Accountant

The Staff Accountant is responsible for handling Controller’s Office functions related to treasury management, grant accounting, Title IV funding, unclaimed property, student club accounting, the posting of general ledger transactions, and other related areas of the University. The Staff Accountant may assist in any of the day-to-day functions of the Controller’s Office.

This is a full-time position with benefits. Responsibilities:

Perform complex and detailed reconciliations and accounting close processes. Conduct research and critical analyses. Identify, prioritize, and resolve complex financial problems that may involve multiple areas of University operations, including: identification of underlying issues; recognizing exceptions; and recommending solutions.

Develop complex financial data and metrics; create reports for a variety of internal and external audiences.

Develop, design, and modify solutions for major segments of a program or accounting system; develop, recommend, implement, and document new or revised policies and procedures.

Review, design, and implement appropriate internal control programs; research new regulations; and implement approved changes.

Manage compliance program in assigned area of responsibility; interpret and apply internal policies and external regulations; and create and/or review compliance reports that may be complex.

Lead and execute unit or cross-functional projects and teams; make decisions regarding projects and programs affecting operational effectiveness, policies, or processes.

Analyze existing systems and processes; identify greater efficiencies and improved internal control opportunities; recommend solutions that may require policy changes or new processes.

May act as subject matter expert or otherwise provide guidance in a specialized area.

Assess client and business needs; formulate recommendations to determine approach to managing and completing processes.

May act as a lead and may coach, train, and review the work of other staff, as needed. However, contributions will primarily be through application of individual expertise.

Other duties as assigned by supervisor or designee.

Requirements:

Education and Experience

Required: Bachelor’s degree in accounting or related field.

Required: one to three years of relevant experience.

Or a combination of equivalent education and/or experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge in multiple areas of job responsibility such as accounting principles, information system administration, grants, and banking/credit card processing.

Strong ability to work collaboratively, accomplish organizational goals, communicate clearly, manage conflict, and act proactively.

Strong analytical ability, including financial analytical ability and analytical problem solving ability; ability to review and analyze complex information; ability to learn and apply applicable University policies and federal and state regulations.

Ability to conduct research and present data in a clear and persuasive manner.

Excellent written and verbal communication and presentation skills.

Ability to maintain confidentiality and effectively handle highly sensitive and confidential information with sound judgment, tact, and discretion.

Ability to consistently handle and follow through with multiple projects and assignments and meet deadlines.

Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).

Ability to quickly learn and use new technologies and applications in depth.
