Sr Systems Administration Engineer

About Us:

Role Summary:
The Senior Systems Administration Engineer will concentrate on the design & implementation of IaaS and 24×7 operations. Included in the focus areas is the critical evaluation and selection of the software and hardware components of the infrastructure, cloud providers, cloud monitoring, deployment & provisioning tools. Lead the effort on IaaS and technology investigations for delivering innovative, high SLA services to GE customers in a multi-location environment.

Essential Responsibilities:
In this role, you will:

Design, test and deliver infrastructure to improve the availability, scalability, latency, and efficiency of IaaS
Influence and create new designs, architectures, standards and methods for large-scale IaaS
Design and build advanced automated Infrastructure deployment frameworks
Provide hands-on technical leadership in design and support of cloud services
8 am to 5 pm Monday – Friday and also participate in 24×7 rotation including on-call and off shifts
Qualifications/Requirements:
Basic Qualifications:
BS /MS degree in Computer Science or related technical field, or equivalent practical experience
8+ years of system engineering/administration experience in large-scale SaaS environment
Experience in one or more of: Python or scripting experience in Shell
Experience working with Unix/Linux systems from kernel to shell and beyond, with experience working with system libraries, file systems, and client-server protocols
Experience working with virtualization and containerization technologies
Networking: experience with network theory e.g. TCP/IP, UDP, ICMP, etc., MAC addresses, IP packets, DNS, OSI layers, and load balancing; SND +
Strong oral and written English communication
Experience in writing technical documentation is a plus
Eligibility Requirements:
Legal authorization to work in the U.S. is required
Must be willing to travel
Must be willing to work out of an office located in Chicago
Desired Characteristics:
Expertise in designing, analyzing and troubleshooting large-scale distributed systems

Familiar with elements of gathering architecture requirements

Technical Expertise:
Experienced Linux administration (experience w/ CoreOS a plus)
Proficient at creating Docker container configurations (experience w/ Alpine a plus)
Experience with container orchestration tools such as DC/OS, Mesos, Kubernetes, or Swarm
Experience with automation tools such as Ansible, Terraform, or Chef
Experience using Jenkins (Jenkins 2.0 preferred) for CI; CD
Strong understanding of high availability and experience meeting tough SLA’s
Understanding of micro-services architecture (Java/JVM preferred)
Experience with logging and monitoring tools such as ELK, Splunk, New Relic, etc.
Experience configuring and maintaining databases such as PostgreSQL, Cassandra, Mongo, CouchBase, Redis
Experience with GitHub

Strong understanding of network and firewall principles and cloud virtualization environments such as AWS
