Sr Systems Administration Engineer

    Role Summary:
    The Senior Systems Administration Engineer will concentrate on the design & implementation of IaaS and 24×7 operations. Included in the focus areas is the critical evaluation and selection of the software and hardware components of the infrastructure, cloud providers, cloud monitoring, deployment & provisioning tools. Lead the effort on IaaS and technology investigations for delivering innovative, high SLA services to GE customers in a multi-location environment.

    Essential Responsibilities:
    In this role, you will:

  • Design, test and deliver infrastructure to improve the availability, scalability, latency, and efficiency of IaaS
  • Influence and create new designs, architectures, standards and methods for large-scale IaaS
  • Design and build advanced automated Infrastructure deployment frameworks
  • Provide hands-on technical leadership in design and support of cloud services
  • 8 am to 5 pm Monday – Friday and also participate in 24×7 rotation including on-call and off shifts

    Qualifications/Requirements:
    Basic Qualifications:

  • BS /MS degree in Computer Science or related technical field, or equivalent practical experience
  • 8+ years of system engineering/administration experience in large-scale SaaS environment
  • Experience in one or more of: Python or scripting experience in Shell
  • Experience working with Unix/Linux systems from kernel to shell and beyond, with experience working with system libraries, file systems, and client-server protocols
  • Experience working with virtualization and containerization technologies
  • Networking: experience with network theory e.g. TCP/IP, UDP, ICMP, etc., MAC addresses, IP packets, DNS, OSI layers, and load balancing; SND +
  • Strong oral and written English communication
  • Experience in writing technical documentation is a plus

    Eligibility Requirements:

  • Legal authorization to work in the U.S. is required
  • Must be willing to travel
  • Must be willing to work out of an office located in Chicago

    Desired Characteristics:

  • Expertise in designing, analyzing and troubleshooting large-scale distributed systems
  • Systematic problem-solving approach, coupled with a strong sense of ownership and drive
  • Understands technical and business discussions relative to future architecture direction aligning with business goals
  • Understands concepts of setting and driving architecture direction
  • Familiar with elements of gathering architecture requirements
  • Understands architecture standards concepts to apply to project work

    Technical Expertise:

  • Experienced Linux administration (experience w/ CoreOS a plus)
  • Proficient at creating Docker container configurations (experience w/ Alpine a plus)
  • Experience with container orchestration tools such as DC/OS, Mesos, Kubernetes, or Swarm
  • Experience with automation tools such as Ansible, Terraform, or Chef
  • Experience using Jenkins (Jenkins 2.0 preferred) for CI; CD
  • Strong understanding of high availability and experience meeting tough SLA’s
  • Understanding of micro-services architecture (Java/JVM preferred)
  • Experience with logging and monitoring tools such as ELK, Splunk, New Relic, etc.
  • Experience configuring and maintaining databases such as PostgreSQL, Cassandra, Mongo, CouchBase, Redis
  • Experience with GitHub
  • Strong understanding of network and firewall principles and cloud virtualization environments such as AWS
