Sr. Software Engineer

Tasks ABB is seeking a senior. Software Developer for its Sugar Land, Texas location. This role will be responsible for leading the development efforts for software applications for electrical utilities. This includes, analyze, evaluate and design advanced applications to monitor, analyze, optimize, and control, and simulate electrical power network, smart grid, and distributed energy resources. Typical tasks assigned to Senior Software Developers include: developing complex areas of the application, analyzing requirements and creating technical design documents, presenting designs to other team members, analytical techniques and user experience strategies to effectively meet requirements. Act as principle investigator or lead to investigate problems, develop solutions and prepare recommendations. Typical duties/responsibilities for engineering may include, but are not limited to the following: • Design, develop, review, re-factor, and maintain software with quality and performance in mind. • Collaborate on planning, development, and testing to meet “definition of done” criteria. • Take initiative to identify issues and work collaboratively across teams to resolve problems. • Identify and manage risks for schedule and quality with the team and ask for help when needed. • Collaborate on planning, development, and testing to meet “definition of done” criteria. • Be inquisitive. Try new things. Fail fast when needed. Help others learn from mistakes. • Be effective in reflection, retrospection, and constant incremental improvement.

Requirements Basic Qualifications: • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science Engineering and a minimum of 8 years of experience in software development; OR • Master’s degree in Computer Science Engineering and a minimum of 6 years of experience in software development; Alternatively, this position may be filled at the senior level for the successful candidate meeting this basic qualification. • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science Engineering and a minimum of 12 years of experience in software development; OR Master’s degree in Computer Science Engineering and a minimum of 10 years of experience in software development; Preferred Qualifications: • Minimum of 8 years of experience in development, debugging and optimization of enterprise grade software applications developed in C/C++ on UNIX/Linux environments. • Minimum of 8 years of experience working with relational database like Oracle, MySQL or PostgreSQL. Worked with these in a near real-time, high performance and high availability environment. • Minimum of 8 years’ experience developing enterprise integration using integration patters with technologies like Web Services, AMQP (Advanced Message Queuing Protocol) message brokers and/or JMS (Java Message Service) messaging. • Minimum of 5 years of experience with UNIX based scripting (either Bourne, Bash, or Korn Shell) and in Python & Perl scripting. • Minimum of 5 years of experience working in Java building services and back-end application for high-performance, highly scalable systems. • Strong knowledge of design patterns and understanding of software architecture. • Proven track record of incorporating secure design and development practices as part of software development. • Strong experience with multi-threading; multi-core programming; performance optimization and system scaling. • Strong experience working on Windows environments. • Experience working in an agile development environment with procedure and standards. • Ability to work independently and collaboratively. Ability to interact effectively with team members, Product management and customers. • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
